Recession Proof GLP...Ammunition Reloader's Thread
I believe it was Omega that recently said we needed a master reloading thread on GLP. I thought it was a good idea.

I know there are several people here that have probably forgotten more about reloading than I'll ever learn, so hopefully, they will chime in.

With skyrocketing ammunition prices, and declining availability, reloading makes more sense than ever.

The necessary equipment doesn't have to be expensive. A basic Lee Loader [link to www.cabelas.com]

will allow you to load one caliber for about $20, and is easily portable. You can take it with you when you run for the hills. ;)

Or, you can spend hundreds, if not thousands on all the latest high end progressive presses and digital charge metering stations. Dillon presses are very popular with high volume reloaders.

[link to www.cabelas.com]

A very popular kit with beginners and veteran reloaders alike is the Lee Anniversary Kit.
[link to www.cabelas.com]

I bought one of those myself, when I began reloading, and still have it. I turn out 2-300 rounds per week with it in just a few hours time.

I suppose this thread could take many directions.

I'd like it to offer advice for beginners, perhaps post up good deals on components when people find them, trade load data among ourselves, maybe tips and tricks from the old pros (are you listening, Lester and Lost Fisherman? ;-))

Here are the cartridges I load regularly:
.38 spl
.357 Magnum
.45 acp
30/30
.308
7.5x55 Swiss

Cartridges for which I have dies and components, but only rarely load:
9x18 Makarov
7.62x39
7.62x54r

I also cast my own bullets for .38/.357 and .45 acp.

With my own cast bullets, handgun ammo costs me less than 10 cents per round in materials, which is the only way I can afford to shoot as much as I like.

Great thread!!! I started on the Lee kit on Evil Twins recommendation and its a great deal. In the last month I moved up to the Lee Turret press and am loading .44mag and .45.acp on the turrent and .308 on the single stage press. Lester sent me dies for .223 so I need to get on that but can't find the small cci primers anywhere.

Supplies are scarce.

Its been a great experience learning and I plan on doing some my next days off. Here is my table with the lee kit, I should take another picture soon, you wouldn't believe it now, lmao. I needs me another table and some cabinets ....

And thanks to all that helped, Evil Twin, Lester, and the many others on this board that know their shit......

Re: Recession Proof GLP...Ammunition Reloader's Thread
Starting at the beginning:

Reloading is the act of remaking Cartridges

Some Definitions:
Ammunition - ammunition is a generic term for complete, ready-to-fire, packages. It can refer to .22 rimfire, shotgun shells, centrefire brass cartridges, Civil War paper/powder/ball packages, etc.
As a generic term it is used as - "I've got to go to Bullet Bob's and get more ammo."

Cartridge - a cartridge is one complete piece of ready-to-fire ammunition. These are the things you put into the gun to fire.
In modern times it refers to metallic cased ammunition.
The term is usually modified by what type of Cartridge is being spoken of. For example - ".30-06 Cartridges", ".357 Mag Cartridges", etc.
It can also be used generically - "I've got to go to Bullet Bob's and buy more Cartridges." or "Let me see one of those Cartridges."
It is what you buy at the store in boxes of 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, etc.
A box of ammunition is a package of individual cartridges.
"Ammunition" and "Cartridges" are somewhat interchangeable; "Ammunition" being more generic.

Bullet - a bullet is the projectile that comes out the end of the barrel. A bullet is not a complete cartridge, it is one part of a complete cartridge.
You will confuse people if you refer to complete cartridges as "bullets". This is the most common terminology error encountered.

In general most people will be speaking of 'Metallic Cartridges' with the 'Metallic' unspoken and understood. If not they will usually clarify using the appropriate terms: 'Paper Cartridge', 'Pin-Fire Cartridge', etc.
I doubt anyone here is going to be referring to these.
Shotgunners use the term "Shell" for their Cartridge.

What makes up a Metallic Cartridge? What components do I need to make reloads?

There are 4 components to a Metallic Cartridge:
1) The Case - reuse over and over.
2) The Bullet - consumed upon firing.
3) The Powder - consumed upon firing.
4) The Primer - consumed upon firing.

1) The Case - This is the metallic case that holds all the other components and acts a the combustion chamber. It is usually made of brass or aluminum or steel.
Generally only Boxer Primed Brass Cases are reloadable. You can either get or buy new/used Cases (empty) or you can save your Brass Cases from store bought ammunition after you fire them.
Generally you can only use Cases to remake the exact same cartridge. If you buy/have .30-30 Winchester cases you can (generally) only remake .30-30 ammunition.
Some Cases can be reformed into different cartridges since there sometimes is overlap in Case dimensions. For example you can make .270 Win. Cases from .30-06 Cases.

2) The Bullet - This is the projectile that comes out the end of the barrel upon firing, leaving the Case still in the gun to be removed and replaced by a fresh Cartridge.
A Bullet can be made of many materials or composites of materials.
Bullets are grouped by calibre. Calibre is the diameter of the bullet in inches. A .30-06 uses bullets that are .308" in diameter. A .308 Win. uses... you guessed it, a .308" bullet. A .30Carb. uses... .308" diameter bullets.
Bullet calibre MUST be the same as the gun barrel you are going to shoot it out of. Too big and you ruin your gun and possibly kill yourself. Too small and you literally can't hit a barn from 10 yards.
Bullets of a calibre are grouped next by weight. Most calibres have a wide range of Bullet weights available from very light to very heavy.
A Cartridge can have many different Bullets associated with it. That is one of the advantages to reloading. You can pick exactly what type of bullet you send downrange.
For example, a .30-06 Cartridge can have a Bullet that weighs 90gr or 150gr. or 180gr. or 200gr. or almost anything in between. All these bullets will have a nominal diameter of .308".
Bullets can lastly have a variety of shapes and construction.
So Bullets (projectiles) use this decending order:
-Calibre (diameter): must match gun barrel
--Weight: you pick for the intended purpose.
---Design/Shape/Construction: you pick for the intended purpose.

3) The Powder - Powder is the fuel that propels the bullet down and out of the barrel. It is technically designated as Propellant. It doesn't explode, it burns fast under controlled conditions.
There are almost as many Powders as there are Bullets. Each Cartridge has a group of Powders that work best.
Powders are generally selected in this order:
-What Cartridge are you making?: .30-06 or .243 or .375H&H or .357Mag or 9mm?
--What Bullet Weight?: Light Bullets will generally use a different Powder than Heavy Bullets.
---The 'What do you want?' factor: Do you want maximum velocity? Do you want lower recoil? Do you want extreme accuracy? This is another great reason for reloading. You can get performance that isn't available over the counter.

4) The Primer - This is the 'spark plug' that ignites the Powder. The firing pin/striker/hammer hits this to fire the cartridge.
These actually do have a very small amount of shock sensitive explosive to get the whole thing going.
There are two broad classes of Primers - Boxer and Berdan. The only reloadable Primer class is Boxer. Berdan can be reprimed but only if you like expensive pain.
All references to reloadable Primers is for Boxer Primers. Boxer Primers are what you will be sold.
There are two sizes - Small and Large. There are a number of subgroups under each size - Pistol, Rifle, Magnum, Match, etc.
Use the type specified by the reloading manual for your load.

With reloading this is how versatile you can get:
You want to shoot squirrels with your .30-06? - 3 or 4gr Bullseye and a #0 buckshot patched with tissue and pressed into the case mouth. Shake the Powder back onto the Primer before firing (or point up into a tree). Good to about 50yds.
You want to shoot elephant with your .30-06? - Use a max. load 220gr solid and know where to put it.

Have fun.
