Am I the only guy here that reloads shotgun ammo.

I burn thru 1000x the shotgun ammo than I do pistol or rifle.

If you shoot skeet or trap it cuts your cost in half... and reloading shotgun ammo allows you to load fun stuff like rocksalt.
Yes it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it....
... No, it's not safe, it's very dangerous. Be Careful.

Re: Recession Proof GLP...Ammunition Reloader's ThreadQuote

I believe it was Omega that recently said we needed a master reloading thread on GLP. I thought it was a good idea.

I know there are several people here that have probably forgotten more about reloading than I'll ever learn, so hopefully, they will chime in.

With skyrocketing ammunition prices, and declining availability, reloading makes more sense than ever.

The necessary equipment doesn't have to be expensive. A basic Lee Loader [link to www.cabelas.com]

will allow you to load one caliber for about $20, and is easily portable. You can take it with you when you run for the hills. ;)

Or, you can spend hundreds, if not thousands on all the latest high end progressive presses and digital charge metering stations. Dillon presses are very popular with high volume reloaders.

[link to www.cabelas.com]

A very popular kit with beginners and veteran reloaders alike is the Lee Anniversary Kit.
[link to www.cabelas.com]

I bought one of those myself, when I began reloading, and still have it. I turn out 2-300 rounds per week with it in just a few hours time.

I suppose this thread could take many directions.

I'd like it to offer advice for beginners, perhaps post up good deals on components when people find them, trade load data among ourselves, maybe tips and tricks from the old pros (are you listening, Lester and Lost Fisherman? ;-))

Here are the cartridges I load regularly:
.38 spl
.357 Magnum
.45 acp
30/30
.308
7.5x55 Swiss

Cartridges for which I have dies and components, but only rarely load:
9x18 Makarov
7.62x39
7.62x54r

I also cast my own bullets for .38/.357 and .45 acp.

With my own cast bullets, handgun ammo costs me less than 10 cents per round in materials, which is the only way I can afford to shoot as much as I like.

Hey Omega-
Sorry. I had to duck out for a while. Buddy coming in off the ice.

I have an old Mec. Couldn't tell you the model # if my life depended on it but I bought it before Reagan was in office. It's bullet proof... never had a problem with the thing.

Wing shooting is where its at for me... keeps you from getting hungry and it keeps you humble.
You have great dove hunting down in your neck of the woods... and nothing is more challenging than dove, You need to try it.

Breast them out and pin a strip of bacon over the breast with tooth picks.. fifteen minutes on the weber and you're a happy man. Save the legs for soup.
Yes it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it....
... No, it's not safe, it's very dangerous. Be Careful.

IMO - If you take it up I would advise Winchester casings. You can get five or six reloads out of Winchester but Federals and Remingtons start to split after one or two reloadings.

Federals work fine... when they split, they split.
One hour at your local trap range and you'll have more casings then you can use,,, the pull-boys will be happy to see you haul them away.

I am a big fan of Winchester's rifle and handgun reloading components. Good quality and prices relative to the other major brands.

I have some Win. .357 brass that has to have been loaded at least 50 times and is still going strong, compared to some Federal .45 acp cases that won't hold a primer after 5 loads.

Brass? I didn't know they still made them. I haven't seen one in forty years.
Why the premium other than the cost of the brass? I can't see how you would crimp them with my dies.

I liked paper for consistent foul weather action in an autoloader , but they won't last.
When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to target shoot and work at a skeet/trap club seven days a week... olympic caliber shooters. As full time target shooters we fought over and paid a premium for AA Winchesters casings, because you could get an easy 8 -10 loads out of one, and they are smooth cased... which made them a little cleaner to handle, more durable and easier to get a tight seal.
