MY RELOADING ADVENTURES

Not to sound stupid(because i am), but here's my situation. A couple years ago or so, I saw this coming so I started buying. First it was presses, then all the other numerous things in each caliber I was focusing on. That's a bunch of stuff to say the least, and money, too. I'm a nut case from way back(some would say) so I usually will buy a whole bunch of shit and there it will sit for eons as my interests shift. Anyways....about a month ago I decided I would ACTUALLY TRY to reload some .223 and .308. Well, that was a learning experience I'm not through with as of yet! I thought I would start by prepping a thousand of each calibers brass. Well, I learned you have to really lubricate the casing or the damn thing would get stuck in the press...duh! I started out getting the 1k .223 cases done and moved on the .308 brass. Damn!! what a big difference!! After totally ripping my press out of the 2x8 it was mounted to, I bolted it into a 1" thick steel table and now it sizes like a charm. In priming them all, I've destroyed a few rcbs priming arms(damn pot metal). So, I've been putting this moment off for as long as I possibly could...time to put the powder and bullet to the casing. Well, I discovered my scales were less than as accurate as I would like so, I just got another scale in that really gets the job done. SO.....How the hell am I going to figure out the "sweet" spot? I'm going to start with the .223 and so far I've made 25 shells each in two different 1 grain intervals and two different weights of bullets. I guess i'll just have to pick out a gun and scope it in and ? what is suppose to happen????? Will it be more than obvious or what????? Shit, I'm getting older and I shake. How the hell is this ever going to work? I might get some young feller that can shoot straight to help! LOL Not to mention I'll be hiding behind a tree wondering if the fucker is going to blow up!!!! YEEEHAAAW we're having fun now!!!
Now what exactly????????

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 553830

In finding the 'sweet spot', you need to eliminate as many variables as possible. For instance, focus on one bullet weight for now. use the same primer, same brass, same seating depth. I typically make only 5 or 10 rounds for each given powder charge. I will make 5 sets, each with a slightly larger charge. Then, take them out and shoot them for groups from a rest. You want as solid a shooting position as you can get, to eliminate the shooter from the equation as much as possible. I start with the lightest charge, shoot a group, measure it, and move up to the next higher charge. You will find one charge weight that shoots a tighter group than the others. Then, I will make up a few more batches of 5 or 10 in smaller increments of charge a little lighter and little heavier than the original. Once you've found the optimal charge weight, you can play with the seating depth of the bullet, if you want to eek out the last 1/4" of accuracy from the load.

I've got a bunch of Varget and am using 55grn fmj and 62 grain ss109's. I also have 2230, rl-15, and w846 for these 2 calibers.
Would you start at 50 yards or 100 yds?

I'd start at 50 yds, it'll save you some walking, lol.

Varget and Rl-15 are probably the best powders for that cartridge.

I don't load .223 personally, but looking at my manuals, I'd start with the Varget and the 55 gr. bullet, and build 5 with 25.5 grains, 5 with 26 grains, 5x 26.5 grains, 5x27 grains, and 5x 27.5 grains, which is the max load listed in the manual I have in front of me.

Then, say I found the 27 grain charge to shoot the best group.

I would then load up 5x27.2 gr, 5x26.8 gr, 5x27 gr, and see if any of those were better.

I know that Lester loads .223, and is a big fan of Varget. Hopefully, he will see this thread and offer his experience with that combo.

ET, I read in one of your posts a while back that you just get the load pretty close and go with it. I may end up doing that for all but a couple of guns. This would take forever if you bring in different powders, bullets, and specific guns. TOO many to fuck with.

Yep. You can burn through hundreds or thousand of rounds in search of the ultimate load. Heck, you can shoot out your barrel in search of that last hundredth of an inch.

I'm a decent shot, but I'll never win any competitions. So, I find a load that works well enough for me, and stick with it.

In the above example, I would probably just stop with the 27.0 grain load and call it good.

Re: Recession Proof GLP...Ammunition Reloader's ThreadQuote

When I had my "not so decent scales", I loaded up what I thought was 24 grains and damn it sounded and kicked like a larger caliber. I looked at the brass and they still had the primers in them and didn't look split or anything, but I knew I'd better get some "real" scales. I didn't aim at anything, and stood with my arms wrapped around a tree just pulling the trigger!!!! LOL!!!!

Re: Recession Proof GLP...Ammunition Reloader's ThreadQuote

The nice thing abut Varget and Rl-15 with the .223 case is, you simply can't fit enough in the case to create a really dangerous load. Both list their max loads as compressed in that case. That means they are filled right up into the neck before you seat the bullet.

For .308 with 150 grain bullets, my favorite load is 42.5 grains of Rl-15. It shoots groups with all holes touching out of my rifle. That's plenty good for me!

$1000 worth of primers?! Holy crap!

I was reading on the castboolits forum recently that Lee is phasing out the Lee loaders. I guess they just aren't selling very well any more.
