Venezuelans vote as Hugo Chavez looks to rule 'indefinitely'

Venezuelans are voting in a referendum which if passed would allow President Hugo Chavez to stand indefinitely for re-election, a measure which has been defeated before and upon which the controversial leader has staked his socialist "revolution".

Pre-voting polls suggested the outcome would be a "yes" verdict and a victory for Mr Chavez.

Polling company Datanalisis projected 51.5% for the "yes" campaign, against 48.1% for the "no".

"We must guarantee the continuity of our revolution," Mr Chavez said. "It is for the future, for your children, for your grandchildren."

More than a million Chavez supporting redshirted volunteers have been knocking on doors, handing out propaganda and urging the 16 million voters to turn out for the referendum.

The president's team believe that the last attempt to change the constitution, the 2007 referendum, was lost due high levels of abstention.

Government-controlled media, making up the vast majority of options available to the Venezuelan, have been bombarding the air waves with images of Mr Chavez inaugurating public works, meeting with world leaders and embracing the poor as he hands out the benefits of his social programmes.

They are responsible for him winning more than a dozen votes since he came to power in 1998 but, which along with foreign policy, have eaten billions of pounds out of the government's budget,

Mr Chavez has said he wants to rule until 2049, his health permitting, allowing him to consolidate his "Bolivarian Revolution", named after Simon Bolivar. He wants to mimic his more immediate role model, Fidel Castro of Cuba, who ruled for almost 50 years before handing over power to his brother Raul in 2007.

After 10 years of rule by Mr Chavez, a former paratrooper colonel who led a failed coup in 1992, Venezuelans have seen massive change. Increased social investment, nationalisation of key sectors, foremost among them the oil industry, and their leader missing few opportunities to poke Washington in the eye have all occurred.

Whilst poverty has fallen, it is still endemic. Crime has risen dramatically, with Caracas now among the most dangerous cities in the world. Food and power shortages have become common, with the economy totally dependent on oil revenues.

If the oil money runs out, and with prices at under just $40 a barrel, that seems a possibility, the whole system could come crashing down. Hence the urgency for Mr Chavez to win re-election now, as many analysts believe tough times lie ahead.

On Friday a Spanish MEP, Luis Herrero, who was due to observe the referendum, was expelled from Venezuela for calling Mr Chavez a "dictator".

Nobody should be President for life in any country.

Of course, he is winning. He jails anyone who opposes him and no doubt, he has stuffed the ballot boxes in his favor.

The country is not doing well economically. No investors want to have their investments nationalized and run into the ground.

Yes, I would have more equal rights in Venezuela than in the United States:

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation was outlawed in the 1999 Labor Organic Law.

In the process leading up to the adoption of the new 1999 Venezuelan Constitution, anti-discrimination provisions were proposed, however due to forceful opposition from the Catholic Church, they were dropped from the final draft. In 2001, there were renewed attempts to include them in the Constitution. In 2002, Current President Hugo Chávez voiced his regret for their exclusion, signaling that they may be included in future rounds of constitutional reform.

So, if the people of Venezuela want Hugo Chavez to be president for life, why can't Hugo Chavez be president for life?

Why does the rest of the world have to be seen through the eyes of a stupid american 2 term limit when people like Kennedy and Byrd and Spector have been in the US senate longer than most of US have been alive.

You know that same assclown who gave us the magic bullet theory that killed JFK, Arlen Spector, IS STILL IN THE SENATE?

Is this a dictatorship or what?

Can I have some real american democratic term limits in the USA?

Please?

Why all the fuss about Chavez? Oh! I remember now! He kicked the paid off their IMF debt then proceeded to kick their asses out and then nationalied THEIR natural resources from the likes of Mobile ,BP and the like. american fruit company, which by they way had their way through bribery and cronnism before Chavez came into power by elections. No wonder he/Chavez has been a eye sore to certain american interests! Kick the private international central bankers out and take back your own nations natural resources, that always brings bullshit against you!

These moves by Chavez are the very same things another gentelman in Iran accomplished in the late 1940's. His name was Mohammad Mosaddeq.
[link to www.gwu.edu] legally elected by his own people and he nationalised his countrys natural resources from certain American and British interests so he became the same type eye sore Chavez has become!

You just can't defy US and British corp interests without pain and grief following! I am pretty sure certain American and Britsh interests has something to do with trying a coup against Chavez and few years back but the thing is the Venezuelan people and the rank-n-file military personel did not go along with it! I also remember certain US financially aided Venezuelan news agencys got kicked out because of direct involvement in the coup against Chavez. So in fact those news agencys were not reporting the news. they were found out to be out right lieing and aiding and abbetting the coup leadership!

I guess some people on this forum do not read very many if any declassified documents pertaining to the US govt constant meddeling in the internal affairs of other nations but all the while propping up DICTAORSHIPS, like the Shah of Iran,Egypt's Mubarak/president for life, the Royal DICTORSHIPS of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait.....ect ect ect!
I keep hearing the lame bullshit over and over again about spreading democracy to the rest of the world. That is pure bullship because that only pertains to nations that won't go along with American and British financial and natural resources policy, meaning if you don't give it to us wholesale, we/American and British interests will have out perspective govts physically attack you to take it from you!

Same old policy of colonialism!!!

This does not make him president for life it just doesn't set any limits on how many times he may run for election. The people still have to elect him or not. We have the same thing in Canada. It isn't really any big scary evil socialist boogey man conspiracy. Sorry folks.

Yes, it only gives him unlimited chances to run for election.

However, if he follows in the footsteps of his idol, Fidel Castro, anyone who even tries to run against him will either become dead or be in prison along with any journalists who try to criticize him.

He has made it illegal for anyone to criticize him and has used that as the basis for jailing people already.

And thus, a new tyrant is born.

It is a shame because it is a beautiful country and its people have certainly been long-suffering.

He has socialized away their long-term prosperity.

Chavez enemies are rich people who don't get to exploit the poor as much. That's why I don't really trust all that negative news about him, since rich people have lots of friends. Especially negative new brought forth by the Bush administration. Venezuela has oil. Too judge a politician, just look who are the winners and who are the losers in their reign.
