Do you have any step by step farraday cage plans for us dummies?

The cheapo way to go: You may need to solder or wield depending on what you are using for shielding.

Build a enclosure, cover all sides with metal (think of a safe) and apply a grounding wire to the enclosure shielding, ground wire connected to a spike, spike driven into earth.

Re: Communicating after EMP attack, Solar Flare/Storm, Magnetic Pole Shift
Most of us know what we might need, but I was curious if many of us thought about communicating to family or friends. Like having a plan. For example, if this scenario does come round, it might be much better to try and get to my brother's house than attempting to stay at my own. And if plans were made ahead of time, well... the situation could be much more successful than guessing who in your inner circle is going to do what.

Hola SS.

I'm going to be putting a few items into my rather nifty farraday cage. Including several sets of two way radios with 5ish mile radius. I have a generator and bunches of gas (ok...not bunches, but quite a bit). The generator has a farraday cage around it, too. The generator isn't much, but it will power a few luxury items until the gas is gone. Mostly the generator is for refrigeration and water pump operation. I'm on a deep well and haven't quite figured out how to keep that working AFTER the EMP. ugh.

I'm researching other power schemes, but honestly...nothing seems to be worth the time or money involved. I got a tight budget.

I have "organized" a "compound" of sorts with a few local peeps with varying skill sets. They know that if anything happens to get to ma hizzle asap, and bring the agreed upon resources. I have 6+ clean acres and the neighbor (rusty) and his family got 6+ clean acres. Tree lined with Pecan trees across the road and forest behind us.

The paper and pencil idea works, but assumes that various people will have access to wherever the notes are placed. Communication and transportation are HUGE in trying to create a "community". We use what we got, and the paper/pencil idea seems to be what we got.

As an aside, we noticed in Katrina that various military and health organizations used spray paint on doors...and sharpie on body parts. Not an ideal solution.
 Quoting: NevynShyne

Hola Nevynshyne...Good idea. And, if you had access to a running generator for the first few months while making the transition...that would fucking be nice beyond belief, even if yuo eventually run out of fuel. It is the initial transition stages that are going to be the bitch, and anything that makes that simpler or more comfortable is going to be valuable.

Those won't be good enough. You need to copper shield your entire room, with adequate surge protectors and multiple cage ground pins...

Hmmm, why surge protectors? The grid goes down...well.
 Quoting: Sickscent

Leaks potentially through your cage into equipment connected to a power source. You could always leave everything unplugged but knowing the exact minute maybe a tough call. Unless of course you don't use any of the equipment, in which case do not connect any of the equipment to a power source - batteries, gens, etc.

It's probably best to have protected items UNPLUGGED and batteries removed while being stored in a farraday cage. Just my opinion.

I do have quite a bit of experience with surge protectors, conditioners, and the like. LOTS of experience with them. Sadly, unless someone is going to be spending A LOT OF MONEY on a surge protector (multiply what you are thinking X10) then it's really just a "power strip" with a slow-blo fuse. Not really worth using for protection, but certainly worth using to multiply edison plugs. :)

If the power is out. Use a laser pointer. Develop with a neighbor a code book of your own mores code. Develop an exact location where to beam the light into their home. Like that one???

Re: Communicating after EMP attack, Solar Flare/Storm, Magnetic Pole Shift
Here's a thought to add to the mix in regards to farraday cages:

I've noticed two distinctly different approaches. Both seem viable. One approach is to build an actual cage using mesh or steel, totally enclosed, then ground the conducting shell. Place everything within the cage, but isolated from the cage. From my understanding, this design ABSORBS and then DIRECTS TO GROUND, any EMF.

The second approach uses the "skin effect". Similar to the above but no grounding wire. Best if the items are completely enclosed and isolated by a sheet type of conductor. The items inside become "invisible" to the EMF, as the EMF travels AROUND the outside of the enclosure.

Anyone have an opinion on this? which is better/best? arguments for or against?

No...he had mentioned that he recieved word from one of his collegues about a 'bad' solar eruption and that NASA was preparing certain satellites for it...but it didn't seem to pan out. Or, maybe it did and no real damage or whatever was done. I have a thread on that, but it kinda fizzled out because it seems nothing occured.

Keep 1 UHF radio and 1 CB radio inside a unused microwave oven or as many radios as you can fit. The hull of the microwave over serves as a poor mans Faraday cage.

good idea about leaving a note if you have to leave, however, it would need to be hidden in prearranged location, so a stranger wont see it as a welcome, come in and rob your house.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1014204

Have prearranged message drop locations at your own place and help family/friends designate theirs. Could be under a certain rock, buried next to a particular plant or in a can on the ground under a window.

Additional drop locations at some other place family might look for you could be useful if you can get to them on your way out of the area--outside your workplace, along a frequently travelled route you take, and outside a designated public place--maybe a church, firestation, library, athletic field, park, hospital?

Hmmm...You can certainly buy pre-made cages. Some can get quite expensive. The second part of that is that many...many...many...pre-made cages are sold-out or are made to order and have a somewhat long waiting list. :)

Sadly, your comment points to an issue far beyond whether or not you have a farraday cage.

Edit: some people just don't have the know-how to do some things. It's best to do an honest evaluation of your skill sets and find people with complimentary skills. ie; if you are a good gardener, stock up on non-hybrid seeds and garden utensils and find people to "complete" the picture.

I have the food storage/growing/prep and medical portion of my little "community". I have several ex-military involved who are covering the protection (beyond personal protection) and a guy who is a mechanical freakin genious to work on practical mechanics. Also involved are a couple of "general helpers" who can assist but don't have specialties. Between 6-10 people in a "community" is best.

I guess I`m pretty fortunate...all my family lives within 3 miles of me except my bro...and he`s only about 5...They all know where to come if something should happen, and so do about 4 of my closest friends...I got a fireplace for the winter..tons of hunting, fishing, and trapping gear..full propane tank all the time and 5 deep freezes..several generators between me and my buddies..They no the list..well water...I`ve often thought about the communications so I`ve pretty much have just told everybody in advance where to come in case something like this happens...My bro hangs out here so he is aware of the possibilities..

My wife is a mail carrier--I assure you that the mail won`t be running in our area..tee hee...still working on a distillary for making our own beer too.

If you got a well and a generator it`s real simple to hook up...

refrigerator can't be damaged by EMP (motor itself) other digital control circuits will burn out.

If you override power directly to motor it will work.

That brings up another salient point...one I hesitate to mention and don't mention lightly. If something happens, many will die; probably family. We have to be as mentally/spiritually/emotionally prepared for those events as we are for an EMP event.

THAT is an excellent idea! Waher/dryers and old microwaves would probably work out well...If you do set them up as farraday cages, get some metallic tape to tape all the seams and the doors shut. Take the power cord off the washer and dryer and strip back the ground wire. Take a metal screw (self-tapping) and screw the ground wire (usually the one with the green) to the body of the washer/dryer...

That's freakin brilliant!

Re: Communicating after EMP attack, Solar Flare/Storm, Magnetic Pole Shift
So, has anyone made plans in case electronic communications are lost? I was just thinking of the difficulty of reaching family and friends in the case of an EMP attack, solar flare/storm knocking out satellites, magnetic pole shift, etc.

Some of my family only live 1 hour away, but contacting them would be extremely difficult without a car to travel, and phones not working.

I highly suggest using a pen/pencil and pad of paper...everytime you leave the house, make a note of the day and time of day you left and are expected back and where you went.

If you decide to leave your house to move in with other friends or family, make sure you leave a note with all the information, so it other friends or family know where you went and do not wait around your house wondering if you ever get back.

 Quoting: Sickscent

SC, I have a bunch of old Tube Ham radio equipment as well as am keeping a ton of my electronics in sealed grounded 55 gallon drums. When the SHTF, I think I will still be able to communicate.

Your idea of leaving a note is fine, but how do you know that the person reading the note is who you intended? I think a little OPSEC is in order. Use code. Two or more identical books can be used as a code generator and theres many different ways to employ them. Besides, it would take a computer that was programmed with the library of congress to be able to crack the code. I think the NSA will have better things to do. Also, nobodys computer will be functional anyway.

Good luck.
