"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them, will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." -Thomas Jefferson "This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it." -Abraham Lincoln Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin |

falldown User ID: 520470 United States 02/19/2009 04:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Mixed feelings on this one. Starting teachers don't make much, so this would be a bad deal for some of them. That said, my pity for teachers ends at about that point. I remember teachers complaining nonstop about what they were paid, how much work, etc, and it was generally backed up by news and other folks. Then I found out that while a starting teacher may only make $20-30,000 a year, once they get tenure, their pay rates jump up significantly. The teachers that were complaining the most were the tenured ones making $75,000+ a year, and this was back in the 80s. Granted, it's not what they'd make with a master's degree in another profession, but I didn't see anybody at the college guidance center twisting arms, either. They should get paid well, but when a good chunk of their former students are making 1/2 their wages. I have a hard time feeling too much pity for them. I've got a better idea. How about we pay teachers on commission? They make something related to their former student's income. That way there's an incentive to make sure the kids learn what they need to learn to get decent jobs, without turning into nazis or being too lenient. If they're nazis, the kids flunk and drop out, and those teachers lose money. If they're too lenient, the kids won't have the skills they need, and the teachers lose out. However, a good teacher that inspires the kids and prepares them to do well in life could do well enough that the profession would draw in other people who are successful, while "encouraging" poor teachers to take a hike. I can dream, can't I? ~ ~ "He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words." ~Elbert Hubbard |

Other schools have laid off people. I think this is the beginning of a melt down. All the bailouts spell severe inflation. Government, Wallstreet and the bankers will end up with all the money. And many are trading that money for gold. The rest of us go down with the ship. |
