Mount St. Helens gauges stop working

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF and NEWS SERVICES

VANCOUVER -- New instruments installed on the lava dome at Mount St. Helens have stopped transmitting.

Scientists can´t tell what happened until the weather clears, but they think the instrument package, installed Friday, may have been wiped out by a falling rock or steam emission.

Before they stopped transmitting Sunday, the video camera, gas sensor, GPS and seismometer indicated the lava dome was continuing to grow vigorously.

The U.S. Geological Survey says magma pushed up into the volcano in October and started oozing into the crater, where it is dramatically expanding the lava dome.

St. Helens has a late-night blast

In its latest explosion, Mount St. Helens blasted rocks and ash from the north end of its still-growing lava dome, sending a dusting of ash nearly 2 miles from the crater of the southwest Washington volcano.

But since that all happened at about 3 a.m. last Sunday, nobody saw the 17-minute "explosive emission," said hydrologist Carolyn Driedger of the U.S. Geological Survey at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, about 50 miles from the peak.

Scientists knew something had happened because the blast knocked out new instruments they had placed inside the crater just two days earlier.

"This is the kind of event that we knew could happen," Driedger said yesterday. "We have this relatively placid dome-building ongoing since October, but we recognize that we can have these small explosions."

Taking advantage of a break in the clouds Wednesday, scientists took photos and checked out the latest event in the volcano´s eruptive phase that began last fall.

Blocks of rock blasted from the vent could be seen embedded in the snow, Driedger said, estimating they were about 1 foot across. But scientists didn´t want to get too close.

"We haven´t been inside the crater to look for sure," she said.

Ash fell thickly in east and west parts of the crater and drifted eastward over the rim, leaving a thin layer of gray ash on the east flank, the USGS said.

The explosion was similar to an Oct. 1 blast that was clearly visible, the USGS said.

This volcano is on the edge of the ring of fire (i think) maybe the world is going to be rudely awakened to a super volcano?

If you are in the UK watch C4 tonight at 19:00, there is a documentary about that very subject!

Kanlaon Volcano emits steam

BACOLOD CITY—"Kanlaon Volcano spewed steam Friday morning, sending the Negros Occidental government into full alert, as volcanologists said there is no cause for alarm and that such activity was, in fact, to be welcomed.

Residents from towns on the slopes of the volcano sent text messages to journalists here to report white smoke coming out of Kanlaon’s crater past 9 a.m. Ben Panatan of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLC)’s monitoring station in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, confirmed steam emissions from the volcano at around 9:30 a.m. and a light ash fall in barangay Cabagna-an, La Castellana.

However, he assured people living around the volcano “not to worry. This is a natural activity and is no cause for alarm."
