Do you like being pushed around or made to do something you know will cause damage in the long run?

Yes. As an American, this has happened my entire life. As a Californian, we were told we could not raise our emissions standards, even though we all know that not doing so causes damage in the long run. I remember as a social worker, having to take children from their parents because they smoked marijuana, only to have the kids molested in a group home, homeless, in prison themselves. I remember as a probation officer, sending countless youngsters to jail for simply providing dirty drug tests, knowing that what I was doing was only making their problems worse. I remember having to support the war in Iraq out of fear of being called unpatriotic, even though I knew it was wrong.
