look it up, 8million estimated starved out of 100million population at the time, so its closer to 8% but if you add disease and climate deaths it would be much higher than that.

When you see starving kids on TV in Milwaukee you will just change the channel... like you do now when you see starving African kids.

As the author of this thread, it is you who are responsible for providing the info to back up your claims.

Telling folks to "look it up" is beyond fucking lame.

Either provide your sources or shut the fuck up.

Re: 10% of americans starved to death in the first great depression
7 Million Americans starved to death during the Great Depression, but there is no need for that.

[link to www.infowars.com]

It is damn near IMPOSSIBLE to starve to death in America if you keep your cool and use your head. America is rich with food for those who know where to look for it:

Forest foraging
Hunting
Fishing
Dumpster Diving
Homeless Shelters and Soup Kitchens
Food Stamps
Backyard Gardens
Farm Fields
Church Food Banks
etc.

The greatest challenge is the winter, however one can simply educate their self on where to forage for food in the winter to rid their self of this problem. Here is an example of winter foraged foods: [link to botany.suite101.com]

If you live in a location that is poor for foraging you can simply migrate, but REMEMBER: If you are forced from the cities into the countryside for food you are walking into a highly armed camp of extremely friendly folks who can turn wicked as all hell if they feel threatened.

My thumb is black. That being said, the Square Foot Gardening method is pretty awesome and I've had great luck with it so far (biggest problem is the baby wiene dog who seems to like garlic).

Low impact, low space requirements... google it.

Re: 10% of americans starved to death in the first great depression
I am not trying to give people false hope ,but in the beginning of the depression there was no unemployment checks and there were no food stamps. The Americans who lived in those believed very firmly that jobless people were responsible for their own plight. Some of the people who starved did not seek help from charitable organizations ,because they were too embarrassed.

Agree with you on that one. I was watching 9 deer in my backyard TOD(urban). Was thinking how fast the critters would disappear in a starvation scenario such as discussed on GLP. I bet within a month, every wild animal within 100 miles of a major city would be gone. I was also thinking that a lot of the urban forest cover would disappear quite rapidly as well, for heating and cooking.

good luck killing wildlife.

in boulder colorado, one third of the deer population has MAD DEER DISEASE. you want to be chowing down diseased meat ??? and how many mrioe animals and what if the percentage is WAY HIGHER than 1/3 ???

i'll stick to lentils, black beans, white and brown rice and a variety of salsas for viamins. i cna last 6 months on that alone. also add olive oil, butter, and high qulaity fats.

The first 6 and number 9 will all deplete quickly. Don't kid yourself.
Farm fields may get ransacked if there is no protection.Backyard gardens too. But, you may have a roof over your head if you can keep the car.

Re: 10% of americans starved to death in the first great depression
my grandma told me stories about the great depression...she used to live along the Wisconsin River. People would line the banks fishing. Fights over the best fishing holes and people would walk for miles upriver to find more fish. After 6 months, she said the river was fished out.

In Virginia and many other states, deer went extinct during the great depression. It was only later that deer were brought back in from Maine to repopulate those areas.

Hunting/fishing -- if you are counting on that, so is everyone else.

moderate size suv could be ok for a couple if they used a small trailer for thier important belongings and pulled it behind the moderate size suv..then they could travel to regions with serious employment with ease .during the great depression many followed jobs across the country in a long station wagon called a "woody" with bunk beds, kids slept on top bunk .fold out cooking table for roadside cooking needs and a propane one burner or two burner stove and a container of fresh water. and food for a day from a local store
