Farm fields may get ransacked if there is no protection.Backyard gardens too. But, you may have a roof over your head if you can keep the car.
 Quoting: Dervish

Nah, I don't believe 10 million starved to death. Someone's just trying to grab a headline. Such a serious problem that no one ever heard of it before now? Unlikely.

Re: the "ransackers" -- after 4 days without food, people will be too listless to ransack. They will only ransack stuff in the beginning if it's easy to do.

Plus, America's fatties will not even be HAPPY with the healthy lettuce out of the neigbhor's garden. They may ransack, then GIVE IT BACK in disgust!

Need carbs and calories, the fatties do. Salt too!

the natural percentage population increase between 1930 and 1940 was the lowest on record. Something was going on. People were having less babies, less immigration and more people were dying.

i'd heard something similar, based on census data carried out in 1925 and 1935, i think. but actually look here:

[link to www.census.gov]

early 1900s, population was increasing at around 2% annually. during the 1930s, it was under 1%.

That's because people were having fewer kids now. Same as during THIS Great Recession. If they couldn't "find" them, they probably moved elsewhere for work, or moved in with family.

So one in ten Americans died of starvation in the GD?

My parents and grandparents lived through the GD and they didn't mention a damn thing about that. Had lots of other interesting stories though.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 720918

Governments play with numbers all the time. I was watching a documentary just last night about the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and what would happen if another quake of the same magnitude hit today. The official death toll, which was voted on by the San Francisco City Council, was 465. They stuck to that number, and it has become the accepted number for over 100 years.

Some researchers digging through old city records and interviewing thousands of families that lived in the area at that time concluded that the number was woefully low. Thousands, perhaps as many as 10,000 died in that quake. The city didn't even bother to count the minority deaths, the Chinese in particular.

It's not beyond possibility that the US wanted to keep the Depression deaths, or at least the published deaths, as low as possible.

look it up, 8million estimated starved out of 100million population at the time, so its closer to 8% but if you add disease and climate deaths it would be much higher than that.

As the author of this thread, it is you who are responsible for providing the info to back up your claims.

Have you ever seen widespread malnutrition? I'm guessing you don't have a clue. As was pointed out earlier, malnutrition can open the human body up to any number of opportunistic diseases. If an entire family is malnourished for an extended period of time, you will lose some kids, and some will survive. Long enough, and everyone will die. In the case of my family, food was scarce for a long time, but most of them survived. This was not uncommon during the depression.

Where did you get that number?

Even the mainstream "news" is starting to report that 1 in 8 Americans is not getting enough food. It is only going to get worse. But hoarding food is NOT the way to go. Seeds, land in a safe location, fishing gear, and books on how to farm and fish ARE the way to go. As the Zeta say, knowledge cannot be stolen, food can.

BULL SHIT

10% DID NOT STARVE TO DEATH YOU IDIOT

do you know enough on the subject to know for sure or are you just saying that because it seems so unbelievable?

just doing a quick search this is the 1st article that came up but i have indeed heard it and seen it from more reliable sources that million and millions of people who were counted in the census around 1930 could not be accounted for during the 1940 census.
did they die of starvation? possibly

Believe it or not, you can eat grass. This is true for all grass species, so far as I know.

The younger blades are fully edible and the older ones can be juiced.

It's not a great source of calories, but a great source of fresh-greens nutrients.

Grass has a number of good nutrients, but lacks other nutrients. It's good for B-12, and some others, but lacks Vitimin C for example. If you were to try to live on grass alone, you would most likely end up with a lower immune system, Scurvy, and several other conditions related to a vitamin C deficiency.

I don't know if there were 10% of the US Population die or not, but I know that there were more die that people commonly are aware. I remember my parents and especially my grandparents talk about it quite a bit.

I remember my Great Grandmother talk about the Spanish Flu Pandemic, she lost a son and her mother during that time. Some 640,000 in the US, and 30 - 40 million worldwide died in that.

They talked about these two events in the same hushed tones.

Americans are starving to death everday. But we don't call it that. We call it heart attack, stroke, liver failure, etc. And of course no one can wrap it around their head that a fat person can actually starve to death. But the fact of the matter is that for the first time in the history of America, the average life expectancy has begun to decline sharply...

Agreed. A Doctor... Wallace I think his name is... wrote about this very thing in "Dead Doctors Don't Lie". Our processed, irradiated, etc, foods don't contain the nutrients and vitamins that we need in the quantities we need, therefore people are eating food in larger quantities. So instead of being satisfied with 50 carbs a day, the average American is consuming 200 - 400 carbs a day. Way too many empty calories. Essentially starving your body from what it needs to survive. This is causing obesity and related health problems across the board.

Exactly, back in the 40's - 60's we all got locked into the "food pyramid" crap that the Government and big agriculture was foisting off on us. Meanwhile, the quality of the food was declining rapidly. When "Starvation" is mentioned, most people think of those swollen-bellied children in Sub-Sahara Africa who don't get enough to eat, but the human body needs certain elements in certain quantities, the absence of one or more of these elements in your diet is a form of starvation, and it doesn't matter how much you are eating, it will cause you health problems.

i've been studying the 1929 depression tonight,it really has me freaked out, its way worse than i orginally thought, they say there was so many suicides nobody even kept track, even read some ate their own apendages to stay alive,
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 607509

Like I was telling the poster above we all better understand what is taking place in the World, and the Power that has every mind wrapped like a pretzel or we will all be in for a shock!

but the scariest thing is the collapse of today is identical, even the govt actions are the same, its like history repeating except this time it will be 10 times worse and no way out. It's identical to today's situation down to the detail!!!!!!wtf?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 607509

You're awake dude, I can tell. I noticed the same thing.

stock market crashed in sept 2008---people lost their 401K in 2008 NOT 2009 as you have it here

2009

Stock Market will crash in 2009 and N.Y.S.E will go into bankruptcy protection. The year 2009 is representative for the crash of 29 and it isn’t coincidence either, there is a saying that if we don’t learn from history we risk repeating it. For those who have eyes & ears we’re repeating it. During this time the Fed’s will not add anymore money to the shrinking economy in order to control inflation.

2010

Inflation takes off because of the on going oil currency war between the Europeans and the Americans, many countries will continue to dump their US dollars for euros and buy their oil at cheaper euro denominated wells. The US dollar resumes its downward spiral and at this junction the common person will try to convert their dollars to other denominations for hedging loses. Bank runs will be common which will lead to Bank failures. The US government will allow all of this with no Fed capital injection so the contraction of the money supply continues strengthening the Dollar from sinking too low in order to protect the 1% Rich.

2011

GNP will continue to fall (inflation/dollar ratio GNP) this means that goods and services did not increase the GNP dually on demands (population increase) but mostly because items costing $1 during the Clinton years (1993) cost $1.51 today with Bush (2008) because of this inflation it costed more to buy the same goods and services increasing the GNP and all this inflation was created by printing excess money [National Debt].

2012

The Great Depression is in full swing, GNP down, stocks have lost 70-90% value and thousands of Banks failed contracting “Joe Public” money supply. Talks of redistribution of wealth from rich to poor begins. At this point the Fed’s will make a big money expansion for the poor hoping to calm the riots and chaos country-wide this will lift the veil of deceit as the poor begin to sense that they were deceptively taken advantage, black man and white man will turn their anger towards the establishment and over turn the system, the New World Order has begun.

many died from malnutrition, not from direct starvation. the increase in the US population between 1930 to 1940 was very small so something was going on.
