Market Watch – Mar. 2, 2009 – A look at today and the week ahead.
Key themes to look at this week:

1. ECB, BOE policy meetings with 1/2 point rate cut expected from both. Market already has a ½ point built in so only expect a modest bounce on news of this rate cut. Look for a rally of larger proportions if the cut goes beyond what it already expected.

2. Insurance companies, the worst stock performers in Europe this year are fostering speculation about whether they might be forced to sell more of their equity holdings and give markets the next nudge lower. The insurance industry remains solidly in trouble despite the continued government bailout assistance.

3. Fed beige book will give us a good idea how badly Q1 might shape up to be. I don’t see any shock value from this report. It’s bad and this will only reaffirm what is known.

4. HSBC results on Monday should give a clue to economic conditions in Asia. HSBC has large exposure in Asia. Watch these results closely. HSBC was the first major backer of subprime loans to show cracks in the bubble two years ago.

5. Credit ratings agencies have made it clear to investors they should expect more emerging European downgrades! Romania and Latvia are now rated as ‘junk’. Ukraine's downgrade to CCC+ this week is the big one that has roiled the European market. Fear of further downgrades and risk that IMF deals with Latvia and Ukraine could unravel weigh heavy on investor sediment.

6. South Korea has sent out recent signals that there economic situation is quickly deteriorating. HSBC results on Monday can be read as a barometer of South Korea’s economic health. The Geopolitical implications of an ailing South Korean economy could put it into flashpoint focus; especially with all the renewed saber rattling from North Korea.

Today’s market will be a volatile session and General Electric will weigh large on the loss side. The fact that their credit rating has been compromised and they had their first dividend cut since 1938 gives good insight as to how severe the economic pain is spreading.

The European Union has rejected the Eastern Europe’s aid call for 227 billion dollars in loans.

[link to www.bloomberg.com]

This is a very ominous signal that Eastern Europe is not going to be supported. Expect those fragile economies to implode within the end of this month at the latest if no further aid can be secured.

All of this will weigh on the market today and the continuation of Friday’s fall towards the 6K territory will commence and we will get below the 7000 level today.

Today’s forecasted closing range 6750 to 6850.

We will bottom out today or tomorrow and then bounce for the rest of the week. (Charts say an "up" week is in store)

However, who the heck knows, if panic really sets in on this AM sell-off. Today looks down and I'd say BIG:

6,600 +/- the close for either today or today and tomorrow combined. Then seriously, bounce city - then ALL THE WAY down to NEW LOWS. It will scare a lot of people and this should all happen with 10-15 days.

Futures are rallying hovering around the triple digits like I said before futures aren't everything plus I believe fair value is up I'm not sure didn't check CNBC today just got up. Anyways the markets will go green in the first couple of trading hours as another fake rally will occur do to consumer spending and profit up about .4% so we should see a lot confidence and buying lets see after lunch though.

Diet, what do you think bro you still keeping your prediction range you have been almost spot on for a good time now.

According to all indicators today (Monday the 2nd) is going to be a very painful day.

Asia opened down 3% on news the HSBC was suspending trading of their shares pending a company announcements. The Asian markets have had little to NO upward momentum today, in fact in some cases they continued their slow decline throughout the session and closed down nearly 4%.

The US market will blow right though 7000 like it was nothing, we are coming up on some technical support lines for the DOW & S&P but after that the next support for BOTH of these indexes resides at an additional 50% haircut.

Prediction: DOW opens down - tries to made a mid-session rally but fails - DOW falls into close. Final closing price -160 to -170.
