If Nancy gets anywhere near it she will kill them.

It depends on how many dogs are in the pound, how old the dog is.

Probably has 3 weeks max & then its off to rainbow bridge.

I HIGHLY recommend you find a way to keep your dog or find somebody to take it.

Dogs that go from happy homes to a pound become very depressed & often aggressive. This will shorten the time that they are held.

They usually try to find someone to adopt. A lot of them have a "no kill" policy now too.

Oh, and you have to pay to drop off a dog at the pound too.

A lot of pounds will keep the dog alive if you are willing to provide the animal with food. Ask them. Look for a rescue operation that will try to place it before going the route of the local pound.

Bad idea. And what happens also depends on where you live. I live in a large area. Dogs get 3 days max. Unless it is an aggressive breed. Or a black dog. Black dogs, even labs, are harder to adopt out.

If it shows any sign of illness it is as good as dead.

I think our society needs a huge " Wake-up" call.
As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all... a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day.

Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore.

So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays" that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are;
"We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving to that doesn't allow pets and why did you choose that place instead of a pet friendly home?

Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?

"We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10- 12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs!

"She' s tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family, how about some obedience training & exercise?

They always tell me: "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog."

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.


Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps.

It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it.

If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted.

It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed.

If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long.

Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.

If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down"....

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk - happy, wagging their tails.

Until, they get to "The Room", every one of them freak out and put the brakes on when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them.

Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are.

Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff".

Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams.

They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pet's corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage.

What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much further than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this: DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!
Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is.
I just hope I maybe changed one person's mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog.

I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt." THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT!

Man that sucks. Dont know. Guess it depends on the pound and your dogs adoptability. I will never get rid of my pets.
Way too painful. I would suck it up and find someplace that would take him, or offer more deposit down in any home I would have to rent. I Just could never do it.
What is your situation anyway?

We are giving our dog away but cant find a new owner that wants it. So we have no other choice but to give it to the pound. What exactly will happen to it? Are they going to end his life immediately?

I've heard the same thing...usually pet rescue organizations are the first ones at the shelters when they open so they can grab adoptable pets right away, before the public.

I had to abandon my cat when I lost my apartment. It still tears me up. Probably will for the rest of my life.

My dogs are part of my life. I would be so upset and probably like the other poster would not ever get over it.

My mom gave her dog that she had for 3 months to a shelter last year. My daughter cried for days, frantically, I cried too.

She did bring it to a good shelter that placed it fast. So that was the good part of the situation. This shelter was very picky about who would be allowed to adopt the dog.

As for me, a house is not a home without my furry family there with me.

But do not get me wrong...I know there are legit reasons why sometimes people need to find homes for their pets. And if you are one of those people then I do feel for you. I helped someone place their furchild before. The owner did not have much time left on this planet and it was a relief to them knowing their pet would be taken care of.

But please do not get too hasty and take it to the pound. There are more kill shelters than no kill. And to top that off....some counties allow them to be taken for medical research. It is big business.

I understand you not wanting to give too much info out but I bet if you give the town and state you live in someone here may be able to direct you to a rescue group that can take your pet.

I used to work in an animal hospital, and actually had a woman that brought in her cat to have it put down. There was nothing wrong with the cat. She wouldnt give us reasons as to why she wanted her cat put down.. Beautiful cat too. I refused to take part in the euthenation, because the doctor didnt question it further and there was nothing wrong with it. Unfortunately for the cat on this particular day & time, we had a "fill in" doctor for one of our regular doctors who was out on vacation. Our particular hospital never put animals down unless there was nothing we couldnt do for it. Our doctors just didnt see fit to put an animal down that didnt need it, or that we could fix. Usually people that worked there would either adopt the pets themselves, or we would keep it as a hospital pet, every day rotating the days which animals got to have the run of the hospital each day. It was the best animal hospital I ever worked at. Anyway, my point is, another idea is to put a flyer up at his nearest animal hospital. Perfect place to find a pet person looking to adopt.

I would rather live in my car- then send my dog to the pound.

OP is your dog a mutt or a certain breed? There are many rescue organizations for individual breeds that are no kill. They would glady take your dog, even if it is only 1/2 of the organization's sponsored breed.

The internet is your friend do a search. Also search for no-kill organizations where you can abandon your pet. Good luck and let us know if you find someone to help.

Kanigo: I am with you all the way. I have 5 cats (all rescued) and I have to tell you that I would starve before they went hungry! They have all been such a blessing and they are like my "children". We are fostering a cat right now that was really abused, and she is a challenge. I just see her make progress every day. Today she crawled into my lap for the first time and we snuggled. Just makes things worth it:)

Yes, they can end its life immediately if it is a shelter run by a city or county.

What 612898 posted above is correct. I was an AC Officer for several years.

In my state the law is that the animal shelter had to keep a stray dog for only 72 hours for the owner to claim. And then the stray can be put down. But "turn-ins", what your dog will be, can be but down right away.

Our city is only 100 thousand people and we put down 2000 dogs and cats every year. Lots were puppies and kittens because people don't get their animals spayed.

When overcrowded we were forced to put down black dogs, aggressive breed dogs, old dogs, sick dogs as soon as owner turned them in. If we had room a turn-in could stay maybe 4-5 days before being put down - week max.

For awhile things got better because the volunteers worked diligently to find the animals at least foster homes. But I hear with the credit crunch that more people are turning them in and less people can afford to adopt them. I also heard that the animal groups aren't getting donations as much and are losing their goals of "no-kill" shelters and are having to turn pets away for lack of funds.

So I would suggest that you spend more time and effort to find him/her a home and not take them to the shelter. If you have to move & can't take him with you is there a friend or family member that could watch the dog temporarily to give you time to find him a home?

If you turn him in to a county shelter then his/her chances of making it or not good especially if you are in a big city. You can kiss him/her good-bye!

Try to find one that is run by a humane society and avoid the county shelter.
