Quoting: Neo81xxx Not to mention it's horribly outdated in regards to modern hardware. But you do bring up an interesting point, starting an app on a modern smartphone from a command line. The texters will find that command shells are notoriously unforgiving of abbreviations. Jack of all trades master of none "shall not be infringed." Psych User ID: 903456 Netherlands 01/05/2013 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For some reason I think that once TSHTF all these highly advanced systems that we have will go puff because no one alone can dominate these huge operating systems like Windows XP or higher. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 633026 In what type of scenario wouldn't you be able to obtain all these highly advanced systems but would be able to obtain old hardware? Which leads me to my next question. Where and how would you able to obtain the hardware to run MS-DOS on, period? MS DOS will run on modern hardware but will not use the RAM as such, DOS had great difficulty with RAM over 1 MB because when DOS was written 1MB was seen as extreme! One had to load EMM386.sys in config.sys to get some addresibility etc over 640kB. MS DOS will only run FAT32 on disk and only up to about 80mb (I forget the exact limiting size now but it may have been a BIOS limitation). USB came after MS-DOS and there was no Plug 'n Play so drivers might be problematic. My first 'XT' had a 10Mb disk and 256kb RAM! (1982), my second was a Zenith 286 with 640k and a 20mb harddisk.... We used 'Clipper' from Nantucket (now CA) to do GUI's under MS-DOS I was just a kid when those systems were being used. The problem that I have with the OP's motivation is that he assumes that when TSHTF all these highly advanced systems will be unavailable but somehow he will be able to find a machine to run MS-DOS on. I wonder which type of scenario that would be. |
