Just on Nasa TV! STS119 Discovery encounters UFO! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 607650 United Kingdom 03/17/2009 02:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | once again, rather basic optics. you are looking at an object who's distance from the observer is measured in nautical miles. The magnification on the camera is rather HUGE. now pass small debris and dust ( a small cloud of which follws the ISS in orbit) and sidelight that with the brightest light we know of ( the sun). The fuzzy patterns and size of the objects are cause by diffraction ( read up on it). You can duplicate this by holding you hand up to a light then making the gap between your fingers as small as possible. You will start to see multiple gaps and multiple lines. As the gap, or the object, approaches a multiple of the wavelength of the light present, it bends slightly when passing the object creating regular appearing fuzzy edges. You can demonstrate this with a microscope (almost everyone has. Put a dirty slide on and focus just beyond the plate: instead of fine particles you'll get HUGE elaborate designs that look astonishingly like what you see in this video. The camera is focused on the tether, not the dust in between. This is mostly child splay for anyone with some decent science knowledge. I'm amazed by how easily people will buy into ridiculous explanations for simple phenomenon. Quoting: antisoshal 420394So tell us, in he infamous tether video, how did hundreds of the these droppa stone shaped 'objects' manage to pass both in FRONT OF and BEHIND the tether? |

All I see is a big bright spot move from upper right to lower left. I wish there was more of the video to maybe give it some context. Kinda underwhelmed with this one.... Post up some more vids of the older UFO sightings - the ones with the floating squiggly things look cool! This one, not so much. |

antisoshal User ID: 420394 United States 03/17/2009 03:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | did you just ask how HUNDREDS of dust particles managed to get between the space shuttle and a tether 12 miles long? HUNDREDS of dust particles? wow. the magnitude of hundreds of dust particles in miles of space is daunting I agree. Well, maybe not. Its dust. Its everywhere. Theres actually a small cloud of it that travels with the ISS. As the ISS sweeps a path through what used to be empty, it impacts millions of particles an hour. Through static charges, friction and the loss of energy to the impacts there is a growing cloud around the ISS. Gradually this cloud will start to adhere to the station. Eventually the solar panels will have to be cleaned, but it will probably be safer and easier to replace them. In a few million years of stable orbit, the dust would accumulate enough that it would start to decay the orbit unless other forces were used. In a few more millions of years, hey look a small moon. Again, basic astrophysics. You can demonstrate this most of this for yourself with a microscope and some slides if you cared, but its prolly much more fun seeing aliens in every video than finding out that we've ONLY put a group of people and an object the size of a football field permanently in space. There's no payoff to actually having rational science explain things. It just creates belligerence. You want UFOS in every video, so science be damned, you'll find them. I suppose really that's best for those who want to make sure no one sees them. If they let anything through, you'll be the first to shout about it and who the hell but people here will believe it. Sort fact from fiction people. Actually knowing the difference will be the only weapon you have against those hiding one or selling another. Id love to see the aliens reacting to us seeing every lens flare and diffraction artifact as proof of a government coverup of their existence. If I were them, I'd wait until we were smarter than that too...... I'll sit back and wait for all the insults and sycophantic nonsense of people looking for a support group instead of answers. |

The cross hairs are support struts for the docking bay. The spot is a lens flare from the sun at an opposite radial to the center of the camera. The black spot in the center is the same spot you get at the center of images from a mirror powered telescope. Because the prism in the imaging camera acts like a parabolic mirror in a telescope, the epicenter of the image is dark. That's not an issue for the camera because it rests over the struts, but it causes a darkened area in the center of the flare. There are some pretty decent videos of unexplained things out there. This just isn't one of them. The effect has been there for almost as long as the ISS. Not sure why its suddenly an alien today. maybe its a slow news day. |

HUNDREDS of dust particles? wow. the magnitude of hundreds of dust particles in miles of space is daunting I agree. Quoting: antisoshal 420394Ok lets keep this simple. You claim that in the original video, the object is an out of focus dust mote yes? Right, in the tether video, the tether is some considerable distance from the shuttle. We see your alleged dust motes passing both in front and behind the tether, so we must conclude that your dust motes are actually around the tether yes? So tell me, how does the camera manage to focus of the tether and also manage to magnify this tiny dust motes at the same time? Explain away. |
