Anonymous Coward User ID: 636999 United Kingdom 03/17/2009 04:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Satellites ARENT immune to dust. The same effect occurs around them. The time it will take to disable solar panels and/or accumulate to the point of disabling is long enough that we simply haven't reached that point yet. Most of what we make simply wont last long enough to see that day. The mass and area covered by the ISS are several magnitudes of order larger than any other object we have put in orbit, so the effect of particles is also amplified. Even as a static accumulator, its surface area and mass for storing a charge dwarfs anything else we have up there, so in shear static electomotive charge alone the forces are huge. Now add the effects of solar radiation causing ionization and a buildup of charge on the sunward side, and I wouldn't be surprised to see charged particles doing spirals and cartwheels in the interaction between fields. Quoting: White Hat 525020You cant just watch the cheato crumbs next to your mouse and apply it as field motion physics in vacuum. If you took a Vandegraff generator back to the dark ages, you'd be called a warlock for making someones hair stand up. I'm a shill for knowing some rather basic science in its otherwise absence. It's really all about what you are looking for: Encouragement and support, or answers. Agreed. Static will have made the dust move weird... like in the tether vid. I even watched (with dismay) the UFO Hunters reproduce the same effect. (Thought the floating corneas looked familiar!) You're no shill. I've been known... but this principal is soo basic that it is just redunkulous. OP!! Prove me wrong! I can't watch the video... someone post some pictures!! But I swear that if it is the stupid cornea lens flare I will call you all FOOLS!!!!! dude, static would cause an object to do one off flicking/bouncing movements in space, i have seen objects with my own eyes and on random youtube videos yes..but, i do alot of visual maths in my study and work and when you see something do 3-4 mathmatical movements and just dissapear..it makes you think don't judge my english. |

If youre interested, read up on sprites and upper atmosphere lightning. The power is amazing and we know very little about what causes it. Didn't really see anything there that defied explanation given that the imaging was mostly in infrared and this the heating from the sunlight makes everything show up as huge and white on an otherwise cold backdrop. In the visible spectrum most of those meteors wouldnt be visible. You'll see some particles fade in and out as their path changes. Textbook example of something that looks inexplicable to the average person but is the status quoe. There are some similar videos where some of the "meteor" change direction, leaving their tales visible. I've yet to see any science based explanation of that. I cant really imagine what one could be. Even static fields cause parabolic motion, not right angle turns. |

Stuff reacts differently up there. You can look at simple things and see much more elegant behavior. This has actually been done before, by people who wanted to prove if they could be ufo's. its duplicatable. just not interesting to people who need a daily dose of UFO conspiracy. |

I say BS, I have a high quality copy of "The Secret NASA Transmissions" and these craft are REAL. They are all over the skies all the time. Size wise they're about the size of the ships from Independance Day and smaller down to the size of a standard bomber plane. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 637014 Switzerland 03/17/2009 04:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | static wouldn't just make things bounce. Objects are attracted to opposite fields, and that force would create parabolic path changes. Now add the pact that the fields change quite a bit from second to second and the paths can get VERY complex. The eddy (read up on eddy currnts) currents flowing on the skin of the ISS would also create some serious magnetic fields that would change constantly. You are talking about masses of less than 1000th of a gram floating in a vacuum so the strength needed to affect change are minute and at that scale changes happen constantly. Again, this isnt static from rubbing your feet on the rug. Same principle, but WAY different scale. At any given moment your body has a continuously changing static and magnetic field. Its dwarfed by your phone, the power lines in the room, and mostly by the air around you. If you remove all of that, including the air, then watch the dust react to only these subtle changes, its cool. Quoting: antisoshal 420394There's a reason why we want to put labs in space, you know. antisoshal User ID: 635487 United States 03/17/2009 04:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Never really understood the Ice thing. In an almost vacuum, the boiling point of water is pretty damn near "NOW". Sunlight heats the surface of any solid object rapidly, and any "ice" would boil off rather quickly. There's not much water floating around out there looking for a mixed drink. Comets are a great example of this. They are just huge ice blocks evaporating at an enormous rate. They gain a bit of an "atmosphere" that slows the process down a bit. Ice on a small scale like what would accumulate on the shuttle during the climb wouldn't last through the friction of takeoff. The only occurring ice at the ISS is shortly after firing attitude thrusters. On the shade side of the ISS ice can accumulate for short periods, I've read. It has shown up in some shuttle footage where adjustments to orbit have been made while the bay was open. It's always behaved somewhat like you think it should, when Ive seen it. |

antenna User ID: 617652 United States 03/17/2009 05:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't see anything in the first posted vid...but the rest... I think we call them "souls" here on Earth. I say "souls" because I have seen with the naked eye what seemed identical to the glowing, moving & pulsating orbs. I know what I (and 3 others) witnessed was in fact a retreating "soul". A child miscarried....and the distraught mother worried if the soul was okay. As the mother sat in her wheelchair, the heavens opened...our ear pressure changed and it we all got a light show in the sky. All who watched were in amazed as it grew out of the darkeness....danced around a bit to get her attention, and then once it had her attention(and ours)...it pulsated...it danced(you could feel it saying here I am....I'm here...seee...look at me...I'm fine...)it vibrated... pulsated...flickered...then it discharged an extremely bright crystal like light and then it went away. I think it tired. It ave a final curtsey an then it collapsed onto itself...sucking air pressure with it. Our ears could hear it POP as it left and our ears were draining earwax fluid afterwards. Literally, this orb of light gave a show...and responded to mental questions and thoughts of the mother. The others just witnessed the event but the mother truly interacted with this orb. Her sorrowful was eased after this...smart orb. The behavior in the vdeo seems similar to that experience. I get the same "feeling" just watching them. I'll put my money on these "UFOrbs" are unmanifested souls. Souls being born and souls leaving bodies. Others just hanging around....re-energizing...checking in on fam and friends. Energy LIVES. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 635573 United Kingdom 03/17/2009 05:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | once again, rather basic optics. you are looking at an object who's distance from the observer is measured in nautical miles. The magnification on the camera is rather HUGE. now pass small debris and dust ( a small cloud of which follws the ISS in orbit) and sidelight that with the brightest light we know of ( the sun). The fuzzy patterns and size of the objects are cause by diffraction ( read up on it). You can duplicate this by holding you hand up to a light then making the gap between your fingers as small as possible. You will start to see multiple gaps and multiple lines. As the gap, or the object, approaches a multiple of the wavelength of the light present, it bends slightly when passing the object creating regular appearing fuzzy edges. You can demonstrate this with a microscope (almost everyone has. Put a dirty slide on and focus just beyond the plate: instead of fine particles you'll get HUGE elaborate designs that look astonishingly like what you see in this video. The camera is focused on the tether, not the dust in between. This is mostly child splay for anyone with some decent science knowledge. I'm amazed by how easily people will buy into ridiculous explanations for simple phenomenon. Quoting: antisoshal 420394:5: |
