Recent observations: The volcano is obscured by clouds this morning. Although conditions for the gas-sensing flight on Monday were poor, analysis of data suggests that the emission of sulfur dioxide is about the same as in previous measurements (range of 50 to 250 tons per day). At yesterdays press briefing there was a lot of interest in gaining better perspective about the size of the uplifted welt and new lava dome. The total volume change represented by the welt and dome as of 3 January of this year is 34 million cubic meters (or 44 million cubic yards). For Portlanders, that is equivalent to 134 Rose Garden arenas. The area of the dome and uplift covers about 60 city blocks. In Portland an equivalent area would extend from the Morrison Bridge to the Hawthorne Bridge and from the Willamette River to the Park Blocks. The top of the new lava dome rises about 550 feet above the pre-eruption surface of the flanking glacier. But the lava dome probably extends to the base of the glacier, which means that its true height is closer to 1100 feet.

Recent observations: The volcano is again obscured by clouds this morning. Next week, if weather permits, crews will attempt more gas measurements, aerial photography, and perhaps placement of a new instrumentation package on the rapidly growing part of the lava dome.

[link to aslwww.cr.usgs.gov]
The area most affected seems to be Lhasa, China.
Tibet, in the Himalayan Mountains...opposite side of the plate that caused the Phuket Tsunami.
The signal is showing worldwide, which pretty much rules out a seismo malfunction.
It looks very much like a harmonic tremor...magma movement.
I believe Nightmare made a prediction concerning Magma....hhhmmm |

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:12 AM | | Re: Latest on St Helens | Quote | Hi Wag, I see in the description it compares the size to the Rose Garden in Portland, that makes sense given the region
I posted this on another St.Helens thread last night , but am re-posting it below because I found it odd
----------------------------------------
Iīm an hour and a 1/2 away from St.Helens
in 2 seperate news reports here they made refrences to NY
In the paper they said the dome would fill 140 Madison Squre Garden
On TV news they said it was the height of the Empire State building
I used to live in NY , so I have some comprehension of the size
but why would they use those descriptions in the PNW where most have never seen theese structures ?
the Empire one I can understand a little, since most have an idea
but the Garden one I would think is lost on most people out West, and why the scale of 140 ?
Conditioning ? [link to www.godlikeproductions.com]
its from the thread that has the video link showing the growing dome |

Thanks Wag!
It is magma movement...
Expect a BIG event shortly!!
Not St Helens alone, but many others too!!!!! |

Recent observations: The volcano is mostly obscured by clouds again this morning. Over the past couple of weeks, seismicity has gradually picked up and is now back to a level similar to that detected in mid December. Also, GPS stations located on the 1980-1986 lava dome have moved northward about 10-15 cm since early January, following a period of little movement through the latter half of December. We are keeping a close watch to see whether these changes portend a shift in eruptive style or vigor. Next week, if weather permits, crews will attempt more gas measurements, aerial photography, and placement of a new instrumentation package on the rapidly growing part of the new lava dome.
<<>>
It sounds like the geologists are getting a bit edgy- this is a change from the usual cut and dried "weīre watching for changes"...

The worldwide seismos are still showing that really odd signature...
More on that when (if) I find it. |

Actually we have some volcanoes here in B.C. and many underwater volcanoes as well!
There are Hot springs all over the placee here and a big scalding hot one in Tofino!.
Something to think about West Coast folkīs. |

I moved from Washington state because I was afraid of Rainier. I drove between St Helens and Hood (God it was so beautiful, like a dream) in the gorgeous valley with the tall grasses and wooden fences. Animals all around. White White tall peaks. Two weeks before St Helens blew. It is now under a mile of dirt. |

Itīs safe to say that the Sumatra quake was the beginning of something, not the end. |

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:12 AM | | Re: Latest on St Helens | Quote | In addition to all this, the effects of all that heat energy poured into the earth from the solar flares a week ago have yet to manifest , and it will.
The magma in the core will heat up even more.

Nope, that would be the equivalent of spitting in a bucket of water and measuring the temperature before and after compared to the amount of energy involved in heating the magma of the core. |

Recent observations: The volcano is mostly obscured by clouds again this morning. Over the past couple of weeks, seismicity has gradually picked up but has now leveled off at a rate similar to that of mid-December. Small earthquakes (M<1.5) occur 2-3 times per minute beneath the new dome. The GPS receiver located on new dome rock continues its remarkably steady east-southeastward progression, having moved about 70 m since installation January 3, an indication that the new lava dome extrudes relentlessly. GPS receivers on the 1980-86 dome, which lies to the north, continue their trifling northward travel, as if the new extrusion is still shoving the old dome northward ever so slightly
