An underwater volcano that sat quietly in the sea off the coast of Tonga has erupted, sending spectacular columns of water and smoke shooting thousands of feet into the air.

The volcano, which is located in the 'Ring of Fire', erupted Wednesday and while significant, it poses no threat to local residents of the islands.

Keleti Mafi, the head of Tonga's geological service, tells the AP: "It's a very significant eruption, on quite a large scale." "This is not unusual for this area and we expect this to happen here at any time." Ash and other products of the eruption are not expected to pose any harm to the islands.
