Anonymous Coward User ID: 631253 United States 03/21/2009 11:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Based on how old your computer is, you will be needing an "AGP" video-card. (AGP is the type of slot) Your looking needs to start with currently made agp cards. Next, you need to see how large a power supply your computer has-this may be an issue with a video-card. Many newer video cards require a separate power plug for it to run. You MUST read the power requirements for any video-card to make sure your power-supply is big enough to run it. |

I want to put in a new graphic card, that's fan less and produces very little heat. Any suggestions? The OS is Windows XP. I get lost with the specs. The card should also have an HDMI output, since the computer is connected to an HDTV. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 639662What make/model? It's important as to the kind of slots available (if any)... Is it PCI/AGP/AGP2x/AGP4x/PCI-E... etc etc... You don't want to buy a card that won't even FIT! As for cards without fans, does the machine in question even have space for some weird liquid cooling? Hell a PIII 800Mhz, id say just upgrade.... it'd be the cost of a good card. At least my Sony pcv-v200G is an all-in-one although the graphics are obviously built-in and the only slot is PCI for the lame tv tuner... that I don't even use.... But it's a P4 1.6Ghz!.. I think you'll be disapointed trying to upgrade a PIII.. most codec/drivers will want a p4 cpu anyways. "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 639662 United States 03/21/2009 11:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for the suggestions. The only thing confusing me really is the pci connectors. The ones in my motherboard are white. The cards on the newegg link have HDMI adapters. I already have some adapters, they produce a better image than a VGA cable, but the image doesn't fit properly on the TVs I've tried them on. They cut a large portion of the outer edges, that's why I was hoping for a direct hdmi out, but they might still have the same problems. Right now when I connect a computer to the HDTV with a VGA cable, it only out puts a 4:3 image. |

After I wrote my question I started thinking of maybe replacing the motherboard and processor with a quiet core 2 duo compatible one. The noise this computer makes annoys me, and all for 800Mhz. So I have one new question, is it possible to replace a tower with a Pentium 3 motherboard with a newer one? Will the connectors still work? Power button, etc? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 601353 Canada 03/21/2009 11:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just remember this when upgrading the Sony. They are kings of proprietary issues. I had to switch a fan, which should have been simple but for some reason nothing but a Sony fan will fit. It was cheaper to purchase a new pc. No bullshit. You should find out in advance from sony which products will work. Just my 2 cents from a former sony vaio owner. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 639662Ok it's a sentimental computer... Now for the bad news. Sony cases will only fit sony boards. So you'll end up needing a whole new box. It's not the end of the world, as the clone stuff is cheap as hell.. You can't compete with Taiwan/China... Another thing you would find even if you were to use lots of double sided stickey tape, is the slots may not align, the block for the keyboard/mouse/ethernet almost certainly will not fit, and you'll have to drimmel it out... Again it may not even fit properly. Also the power supply from a p3 may not be enough to drive a core2/with a nice video card... Did I mention it probably won't even fit? On the budget stuff, I'd say check out Compaq/Acer.. Its "ok" stuff, but I got a quad core amd with 4gigs of ram, 750gb disk for $550.. I know it's hard to let go, I'd wanted to put a quad core in my old commodore 64 case if I could.. as it was my first, but you know it's the way it goes. Yup, and I just noticed that the computer is not as long, and probably a bit shorter than regular, and the design inside is a bit different, so I'm guessing it's not worth buying stuff to find out that they won't fit. Back in 2002 I bought a Pentium 4 processor, wondering if it would fit. I ended up having to build a new computer. I didn't know much about computers then, but building that computer thought me a lot. I just loved the idea of bringing that old computer out of retirement. It's been almost 7 years since I had it with me. |

Actually what I was looking for was just a graphic card that produces very little heat as oppossed to something powerful. The coolest running graphic card, since no matter what it will be better. In other words if there's anything like a 32mb graphic card that was made recently with current technology, rather than an old 2001 32mb graphic card that ran really hot because it was made with 2001 technology, than I would like to know about that card, because unlike the 2001 model, it should run extremely cool. |

If you use the low profile card attachment you will loose the use of the d-sub (blue) video connector but you will still have the DVI and S-Video. Price is $74. [link to www.newegg.com] To be totally honest you are better of just getting a whole new system and a system that you can swap parts out without worrying about it. Usually what you will want to swap out most often is the video card. Homo What's-upians being visual creatures. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 612983 United States 03/21/2009 12:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi OP. I own a P3 slot CPU board, and know, well, too much about that age of computer. (I've got the highest Mhz slot-proc ever made, and the fastest AGP 2x card ever.. lol) If you dont have the dark-red AGP slot, then, you have the worst option, PCI video cards SUCK.. You need to look on ebay (used) for something like this: Nvidia GeForce 4 PCI You can get the MX 4000 or similar. These were mass produced for a while after the GF4 went to GF5 (FX) because of the demand for PCI video upgrades. I dont know if you're going to find one with dual-head VGA and HDMI digital connectors. I have a GF4 Ti with the dual connectors, but its for AGP only. If the dual-head is mandatory for you over video performance, then search for "dual head PCI -PCI-E" video and pick whatevers in your price range. ATI, SiS, etc. cards were more in that market. Note the -PCI-E is to filter out the newer express cards. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 504807 United States 03/21/2009 01:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Don't do Ebay unless you are very familiar with purchasing on ebay. You want something you can easily return if need be. You have been warned. In all reality you would want to find out what specification your motherboard, power supply, pci slots (height, width, other populated pci slots, cabling, etc.) so that you don't end up sending you video card back a few times. If you had the money and where a "smart" fellow you'd just junk that thing and buy (build preferably, but requires a little skill) a new system. I'm pretty sure you don't want to do this so your choices are going to the local "Best Buy" (anybody else left) and buying something from them but they will have a very limited selection. That leaves buying online. You will want to make sure the darn thing fits which is why I recommended a card that can be full or half height and isn't really long. Your concerns then would be PCI specification and width of the card. It's usually difficult to get just the right card. Another very big concern (to me at least) is air flow. I have 200 plus Dell pizza boxes that are pretty much easy bake ovens. Dell made them to be proprietary, compact, and quiet. You get very little airflow and the capacitors and hard drives just bake away. Resulting in a high repair rate. Ever had to diagnose capacitors going bad? Smart thing, new system. Next best, a compatible video card. After that, make sure you can return if you goof. . |

Now is the time to buy. Pretty soon, web 2.0 will hit and bittorrent and all other types of file sharing will be gone, every site will be a pay per view thing or come as a package like your cable. The internet will become nearly useless for most people. All that will be left is playing faggy MMO's like warcraft on PC. So buy one now, because at least you'll still get a couple years of use out of it before it becomes a doorstop. Only reason I'll be keeping internet when web 2.0 hits is to play xbox live. |
