Mirrors Don't Accurately Portray How You Look
Mirrors Don't Accurately Portray How You Look

Mar 20th 2009

Happy Hour HeroPrintOur happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.

The way you see yourself in a mirror differs from the way others see you in real life.

Studies have shown that when you check out someone else your eyes are most likely drawn to the right side of their face. Yet when gaze upon your own reflection your eyes are programmed to study what is actually the left side of your face. So unless you are blessed with a perfectly symmetrical visage, you don't appear to others how you think you look.

Researchers tested this by showing people a photograph of themselves and then a mirror image of that photograph. While the person in the picture almost always chose the mirror image as more attractive, their partner almost always picked the photo.

There is an extra lense that turns the photo back to the right way up, and this also invests the image to the same orientation as the subjet.

If you had a single lense camera, the image would be inverted and upside down, the extra lense corrects this.

Why can't they make a mirror that's like a camera, reflecting the image realistically?

you take a couple of bowls of cool whip and mix in a box of pistachio pudding mix and add nuts, pineapple and cherries.

just use dry pudding mix. do not add milk to it.

In my bathroom I have to separate vanities on direct opposite walls from each other and each vanity has a mirror above it. I think if you look at the reflection of the reflection (as in look in the mirror you are standing in front of but look at the mirror behind you at what its reflecting of the mirror you are standing in front of) you look as you would look to others.
