Odd that this forum would detect the outbreak before the CDC mentioned it this past week.

I don't think this is the flu. With that you wouldn't be able to move and be very sore. No one has said their joints and muscles hurt, a classic flu sypmton.

It's also here on the east coast, but only a couple of people have it, my husband being one of them. I'm a smoker, yet I didn't get it? Strange enough.

I quit smoking a year ago. Every time, almost to the day, I get a real bad cold after being smoke free for one year. The last time nearly killed me, this time so far I just have the ick like everyone else. This is a bad one, lingering cough. Humidifier / breathing exercises in the shower only provide temporary relief. It is rampant, I think it is something in the air from China.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
Yep, I just came down with it. I live in San Antonio Texas. It started as a bad sore throat, and then after treating that with salt water gargle, it moved into my chest. It seems every time the smoke from Mexico and Central America starts coming this way it happens. Thanks a lot pendejos.I was outside most of the weekend, breathing in all that pollution.

Don't think it's a virus though, probably some kind of pollutant that gets into your bronchial areas and then causes the body to react trying to rid it.

Not sure, but I think I had to use amoxicillan last year because the chest congestion got so bad.

Symptoms are in order of appearance, sore throat, runny nose, tickling upon breathing, causing cough, congestion formation.

Usually lasts several weeks without penicillin help, and proly about a week with penicillin.

Son is going to the doctor for this shortly. Will relay what he says.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 606636

Well back from the Dr.. My son (12 yoa ) had a very bad cough for a couple of days. Dr. treated as an asthmatic condition.
Prescribed:
Albuterol inhaler
Symbiacort inhaler
Prednisolone syrup
and
Zithromax antibiotic

Son has not been identified as asthmatic before but although generally very healthy does seem to bring a lot of colds home from school.

Will watch and wait, hope that helps.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
Here in central Minnesota: My boys: age 11 and 15 had it for two weeks. Both missed a ton of school. Incubation seems to be about a week, 10 days.

Now I'm sick. Starts with a bad cough, settles into chest, head congestion, body aches, fatigue & weakness, & a pounding headache....

This started on Fri AM for me and progressed into full blown symptoms by late friday...

I still feel like crap.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
I have been quite sick over the past few days. It started May 15th, a Friday with an ever so slightly sore throat, and the "sniffles". I went on with my daily routine that day, but I could tell I caught something.

Over the next 5 days the symptoms progressed to aching muscles (esp. large muscle groups) such as arms and legs, especially when lifting, or walking. Lack of energy, and sweating easily when doing light work. Stuffy nose and chest congestion, loss of appetite, and some light bowl irritation, but not to the point of vomiting and diarrhea. Sweating and some light (low grade) fever.

In addition to the above symptoms, the WORST part, without a doubt was the chest symptoms. About 3 days into the illness, the chest became quite heavy, and you could hear the throaty sounds like barking, when coughing. The coughs, however, were completely non-productive. It could feel the "junk" in my airways, but no amount of huffing, and puffing, and coughing could knock it loose. It was very frustrating.

On the 5th evening it got so bad, I filled a bowl with hot water, added "Transpulmin Balsam" (German pharmacy)chest ointment(similar to Vicks, only better)into it, and inhaled the steam for 20 minutes to open up my bronchi. I also started taking 400 mg guaifenesine, and rubbed my chest and back with the chest ointment before bed. I felt the guaifenesine helped very little, if any at all.

I finally coughed up a few specks of deep green mucus the following morning. There also was lots of discolored mucus from my nose. Aha! I thought, a break-through. But not so fast!!!! The same evening I was even more congested and the dry, non-productive coughs were just about killing me. My chest was completely clogged; you could feel it, hear it, and see it. I went to bed miserable, but in the morning I finally brought up another large green clot of mucus from my lungs. That was on the 7th day, Thursday.

I decided that I couldn't go on any longer without seeing a doctor. The doctor prescribed the Z-Pack IC Azithromycin antibiotic.

I haven't been this sick in quite some time.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
I had this in California last March/April before the Mexico thing. Worst flu I have ever had. It got so bad I was chocking and gasping for breath one night. It took weeks to get over it.

Then heard about swine flu with the Mexico thing and realized all the symptoms sure sounded like what I have.

Then in August I got the same symptoms but milder. I was able to keep them controlled this time. Although sick not any where near as sick as last spring. But was the same exact symptoms in a milder form.

So I'm wondering why did I catch it twice but the 2nd time so much milder??? Can you catch it twice???

WHOEVER GETS THIS "ILLNESS" IS BEING PREPPED FOR A BIOLOGICAL ATTACK. THIS "ILLNESS" WILL BUILD UP A PARTICULAR ANTIBODY MAKING YOU IMMUNE TO THE COMING ATTACK.

THOSE WHO DON'T GET SICK NOW WILL DIE WHEN THE REAL STRAIN IS RELEASED.

THE POPULATION IS ABOUT TO BE CULLED. THE ONLY CURE IS TO GET THIS "VIRUS" WHICH IS GOING AROUND.

ASK SICK PEOPLE TO COUGH ON YOU. YOU HAVE TO GET THIS IF YOU WANT TO LIVE.

Thanks that makes me feel better.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
You probably work in close quarters with other people during the summer as well. Notice any of this during July, August, etc.????

Think about it.

This has to do with the angle of the sun during the summer. It promotes production of the hormone D3 on the skin......often referred to as Vitamin D3.

D3 helps promote production of anti-microbial peptides.....which will blast apart the cell walls of all invaders......bacteria and viral.

D3 also keeps your immune system well regulated.....keeping it from over-reacting and damaging your lung tissue, etc. (cytokine storm).

Take about 5,000-10,000 IUs per day for maintenance during non-summer months.

If you feel sickness coming on, you can take up to 150,000 units per day for 3 days......then return to the maintenance dosage.

You can get your blood level tested. You want a level 50 to 70. It can take awhile to get it up to this range. Most people go deficient during the winter (approx. 15) leading to a comprised immune system.

Nearly all the cells in your body have receptor sites for the hormone D3. It can help prevent and fight off a wide range of diseases.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
After attending an NFL football game I picked up this infection. EXACTLY as described...

Three days incubation.

Starts as a heaviness in the chest and slight throat tickle. I was hoping it'd be something that'd be gone in the next morning. Unfortunately it wasn't and I was extremely miserable/had no appetite/could hardly sleep.

5 days into it I thought it was starting to break, then it came right back, harder. Could not sleep because I'd wake up to cough violently every 10 minutes... no time at all to sleep peacefully.

Kept myself medicated alternating between daytime and nighttime medicine... now on the 10th day its finally, FINALLY starting to break.

The cold did give me a hankering for oranges so my supermarket had this great deal on florida oranges, so I grabbed a huge bunch of them.

Been hitting them the last two days every time I get the urge to... might have helped it break today [also was able to finally sleep for hours].

If you feel your body hankering for a certain food go for it.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
My wife works at a hospital and everyone there got this really bad cough/respiratory problem and she recently got sick, and I am as well. I have been talking to various people and apparently it has been going around.

I live in the midwest I just wanted to see if this was going around anywhere else.

Incubation: considering she was gone for her weekend with her brother, the incubation period would have to have been several weeks or only a day or few hours.

Right now I am leaning toward [n]incubation of 6 or less hours as I was starting to get sick within a few hours of her coming home.

Symptoms: immediate but not bad cough, followed by a feeling of something in your chest. as time goes on the cough and the 'stuff' in your chest gets worse.

the cough starts to get really bad almost to the point it is uncontrollable, for me I took the generic brand of musinex and it alleviated 90% of the cough and chest fluid/heaviness.

worsening cough and chest fluid/heaviness along with extreme cold chills (for me it was really extreme). followed by body soreness and weakness. without taking musinex for me I would begin to cough really bad.

this is as far as I have gotten but my wife eventually coughed up green chunks (sign of infection), and everything caused complications with her already bad asthma. she continues to cough and feel bad, though her sputum is white now.

she has said the people at work have had this for weeks and it hasn't gone away.

Medication: I have taken off brand of musinex which works for me, other people have said it didn't work well for them. I have also taken dayquill (only thing in the hous) and it works so/so.

My wife has taken steroids for her asthma and also a very strong 5 day antibiotic, but it didn't seem to do much, so it sounds viral.

She took something like "tylenol serious cold/flu/cough" or something that worked to alleviate some symptoms.

Just checking to see if anyone else has seen or experienced this, like I said I live in the Midwest US.

Re: Bad cough/respitory infection going around
I'm home with the exact same thing. I'm trying to keep lymph nodes and eustachian drainage cleared out.. peroxide in the ears, flushed out sinuses last night with neti pot. today blowing out bright gold blobs of infection..thinking of doing it again and adding a teaspoon of peroxide to the solution.

cough is productive, but so far clear. i'm prone to pneumonia so i've got lots of various fluids and juice and stuff.
