I'm so sad that a daughter of this great state has to turn to glp with a request like this! I feel like we've failed her!
From one mountaineer to another:
If you live in WV you are in the safest place you could possibly be in the continental US, especially if you were raised here or know a handful of people who were. We're ALL survivalists! You'll be safer just staying where you are among the good people in this state rather than meeting up with Internet strangers.
We are currently renting a home and worry sometimes about wtshtf and not having a place of our own. Then we remember where we are and the anxiety starts to melt.
Look around you. It's almost heaven. Revisit Babcock and Hawk's Nest, Seneca and the other places you've been in the mountain state. You could walk there quick enough if you had to with the infant on your back. Ever been into a mine? It would not be a walk in the park, but you could go by memory and intuition and will only encounter like minded people on the way. You wouldn't have to worry about people flooding in - only a few road blocks would seal the whole state off. I challenge some miscreant from the city bent on doing harm to beat me to the top! NO CHANCE.
Try to find the Kindgdom of Kanawha by LA Wheeler (out o print, unfortunately) if you haven't already read it. It will help you realize how perfectly placed you really are.
I know life can be rough here, too. But it's not the mountains that make it rough - it's the generations-old beatdown of the regular folk by the greedy opportunists who don't give a shit about destroying the mountain land or about the lives of those living here. You - the mountain mama bear - you will do fine once we are free of that!
When tshtf - maybe then we WVians will be able to shrug off the yoke of the outside interests that rape this state of its' money, dignity and heritage, and finally live the mountaineer life our ancestors intended! No more working for the powers that be! We can take care of our own! Here!
Think of all the small mountain farms with cows and sheep and chickens - do you really think your neighbors would not share? All the ladies at the apple butter festivals and flea markets who make jams and jellies - do you think they are in it for the money? There is plenty here to sustain us all. There's poke weed and purslane, dandelions - RAMPS! All ripe for the picking on vast public lands. Don't fret about it.
You know where to go. Up and in. There is enough room way up and in the mountains to house all 1.8 million of us and I think we could hold off an army. And I KNOW we will care for each other. There is plenty to eat, plenty of fuel and lots of love. Your grandchild is lucky to be a native child of this beautiful place.
That's the magic of West Virginia! You won't be alone, dear - you're among family here.

forgive me for not reading all of this thread, so i maybe saying stuff other's did and you already responded to. what made me want to write is because of your age, and the fact your 18 year old is pregnant. i feel that you are extremely anxious and frightened that you cannot support your child and the grandchild. sometimes being frightened takes on a world of it's own in the imagination and can make a person stampede into the wrong direction. fear can also blind you. take 48 hours to reality check yourself. the first 24 hours do whatever you need to calm you mind so it will stop racing. listen to music, soak in the tub, just whatever it takes to relax and breathe deeply for hours. during that time period keep paper and pen close. when ever and idea pops up, write it down, and then focus on staying calm and relaxed. the next day look at that list. research each idea to see if it can lead you in the direction of maintaining control over your life. once you give control of your life to others you may never get it back. |

Housekeeping pays between $20 to $30 per hour on Kaua'i! You'd be set. Tourism may be down but the super wealthy are still coming and everyone knows they can't even wipe their asses without help, much less mop a floor.
I've done hotel and residential housekeeping also. My health isn't as good as it once was, though, and spending the whole day on my feet is excruciating. I have a bone spur on my L4 L5 vertebrae and peripheral nerve damage. I also have fibromyalgia, scoliosis and arthritis. I'm not saying that I absolutely cannot do it. I'm just saying that I would be in even more pain than I am now if I did. I realize that I don't seem to have much to offer in the way of working. I currently live off social security. Not so much for the money but for the medical coverage. Funny but when I first signed up, I thought the doctors could FIX my ailments! Little did I know that I would never get anywhere in that department. I've tried everything but to no avail. So I am still where I was when I started. I know that soon my social security and my medical coverage will probably end due to the way things are going in government. I don't plan on taking the mark, though, to keep it. Hawaii sounds nice, though. I'm looking into it a little further.

Off topic here, but I too have bone spurs in my neck (was in a car accident many years ago and broke my neck) have bad knees and arthritis also.
When certain of my body parts begin to act up I take tumeric... yes tumeric the spice. It is an antiflammatory and it really does the job of any painkiller.
You might try taking it, a teaspoon in a cup of tea or glass of milk throughout the day and you'll be pain-free in no time at all. The taste isn't so great but the effect will make you forget about the taste (honey helps it go down a little easier).
Best of luck to you and your daughter, and personally I don't think it's time for thoughts of doom just yet.

I know that the economic reality of WV can be such that it is sometimes hard to see the forest from the trees. And winter is HARD soetimes. This winter was especially difficult. There is nothing like spring drive in the mountains to bring you back home.
Have you ever felt like you could just stay "up there" forever? The beauty of it is you can.
I really blame the outside profiteers. Folks here just wanted to live and enjoy the mountain life until they came in and took all the good land, coal and timber. People don't realize that folks now are paying for deals their great grandparents made with these companies. And your neighbors too!! Buck up mountaineers! Take care of each other!
Most people I know wish they were self-sustaining and the irony is this is where you can do it! West Virginia practically invented self-sufficiency! Imagine how lovely it will be when we are all left to practice the skills we have learned from our grandmothers and neighbors over the years without worrying about a paycheck to pay the taxman or the landlord.

I'm from Southeastern KY, and I feel the same way. I get nervous sometimes, but I look around at the good God has given us in this land. Yeah, we have poor folks and uneducated folks, but most of us (even the educated ones) still know some gardening, some animal husbandry, some edible wild plants, how to camp, how to make and preserve food....
We might be hillbillies, but this is a good place to be if TSHTF. I am most of the way to a doctorate, but I consider the summer garden and raising chickens to be more important, really. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 640723

She had the same boyfriend since she was in Jr. High and they were planning on getting married. He is the only person she's ever been with. He decided that being a father wasn't for him so he bailed out. You are an ignorant ASS.
