OFFICIAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 8.1% ? Pfffft ~ Dept. Labor Buries REAL STATS ~ 16% !
So...the rate of unemployment for February is 8.1%

Check this table at the Dept. of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics website:

[link to www.bls.gov]

Note the U-6 Measure:

U-6 ~ Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers,* plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers.

NOTE: Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not looking currently for a job. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule.

UNADJUSTED: 16.0%

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED: 14.8%

One out of every SEVEN workers.

Depends, but yes, the unemployment stats are buried because if you remain unemployed for a certain amount of time, you're no longer unemployed! Can you believe that? Amazing.

If you will look closely ~ the threads are actually about DIFFERENT topics.

This thread is about the GOVERNMENT statistics ~ they publish one thing, but the TRUE number is twice as high. (As if most people can't figure it out...but I digress.)

The thing is the info is out there, but you have to dig. In the mean time, Big Bro blows that smoke up our tailpipes to make us feel warm and fuzzy about things not being so bad.

Had I seen Phenom's thread, I would have added to it ~ which I have done (before your comment, I might add.)

these stats here, im wondering here if theyre including the retirees looking for work who are registered at the unemployment offices/career ctrs.

im referring to a thread i had (yesterday?) where i had read in our local paper that retirees age 70-85 something like that - were regged for jobs at hershey park here in pa.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH:
Alan Isaacman
The People Vs Larry Flynt
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you've heard a lot here today and I won't try to go back over it all. But you have to go back in that room and make some decisions and there is one thing I want to make very clear to you before you do. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like what Larry Flynt does. I don't like what he does. But what I do like is... that I live in a country... where you and I can make that decision for ourselves. I like that I live in a country where I can pick up Hustler magazine... read it if I want... or throw it in the trash, if that's where I think it belongs. Or better yet I can express my opinion by not buying it. I like that right. I care about it. And you should care about it, too... because we live in a free country. We say that a lot, but sometimes we forget what that means, so listen again. We live in a free country. That is a powerful idea. That's a magnificent way to live. But there is a price for that freedom, which is that sometimes... we have to tolerate things that we don't necessarily like. So go back in that room... where you are free to think whatever you want to think... about Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. But then ask yourselves if you want to make that decision for the rest of us... because the freedom that everyone in this room enjoys... is, in a very real way, in your hands. If we start throwing up walls against what some of us think is obscene... we may wake up one morning and realize... that walls have been thrown upin places we never expected... and we can't see anythingor... do anything. And that's not freedom. That is not freedom. So, be careful. Thank you."

The point is that the government spending cannot be supported with dwindling payroll taxes (et.al.) and an ever-increasing level of spending. The balloon will 'pop' with a deafening roar.

The BLS is an excellent source, but, yes, one does need to know how to read and interpret their data.

There's another "unemployment" number that is expanding in this country that I believe doesn't get captured in these statistics at all. What I'm referring to is the situation where an employer reduces time for full-time employees (say from working five days a week to just four days per week) with corresponding pay decreases (so salaried employees are impacted as well as hourly employees). The employees are still listed as full-time employees and may or may not retain their other benefits. This may fall into the area you were originally researching under "cutting wages" and "wage deflation".

I have several friends and associates who work at companies which have had to institute such measures due to declining revenues. All have stated that the policies were implemented as temporary measures, but who really knows what will happen once the economy recovers.

That's a rubber cookie.

The budget does not INCLUDE payments on the INTEREST on the DEBT.

 Quoting: DaJavoo

I don't think that is quite true. The budget does include interest on the debt, but it generally is included as net interest.

You can find it here on Table S-4 I believe for the recently released FY10 budget:

[link to www.whitehouse.gov]

The debt/interest issue often gets muddied when reported on in the press, perhaps because of the number of federal entities supplying information on it (e.g., Treasury, Treasury's Bureau of Public Debt, OMB, CBO, etc., etc.). One of the best sources (IMHO) are the audit reports by the GAO.

Here's their latest report for the last two fiscal years:
