Yes, the officer seemed as dumb as a box of rocks and about as warm hearted as a snake.

Technically he probably did -but the deal is the cop must have known the car was heading to the hospital. In the video you can see the driver had put on flashing hazard lights. He wasn't driving at an unsafe speed when he turned onto the hospital ER drive. The cop could have quickly taken his license and so on written the ticket and so on in about one minute if he were playing fair. I watched the video and it looked like the cop kept him there over fifteen minutes.Meanwhile his wife's mother died, and in that time period a nurse went down to the parking lot at least twice. Even with the nurse just telling him that the mother in law is dying, the cop kept giving the same lame lecture over and over. He repeated the same things and on and on...
I remember seeing in old movies cops escorting people who were racing to the hospital. Whatever happened to cops ASSISTING PEOPLE IN EMERGENCIES?

Dallas police chief offers apology to the Moats family
Kunkle said Officer Robert Powell had been placed on paid administrative leave in connection with the incident last week, in which he stopped a family rushing to visit a dying mother, keeping them for 13 minutes to write a traffic ticket. The woman died before two of the family members were able to see her. .............................

He should be fired plain and simple. And if that nfl gy was just a lil ruthless he'd sue the man persoanlly as well as the police dept. No way that officer has the cash to keep a good attorney for any length of time. Whether he won or lost he'd be knee deep in attorney's fees. Cold I know. Oh well

Common sense tells you that someone with flashers on, pulling up to a hospital emergency room more than likely has an emergency, i.e., the sign "Emergency Entrance". DUH!!! The nurse, her code blue messages and the nurse just about begging for the "officer?" to let them go, speaks volumes.
I'm glad that Moat's wife ignored that jackass pig (and that's exactly what this guy was/is) and went into the building. It was a chance she had to take and I'm glad she had the nerve to take it.
Officer"?" Powell must be a miserable person. Karma is a bitch. |

I know because we went through that back in Decmeber to.
I think the nurse was trying to help the guy and get the cop off his ass so he could be with his dying MIL. Heart of the heroes, ride.

Moats blew a red light, the cop tried to pull him over, Moats did not stop.
After they got to the hospital the cop was certainly was an asshole, but why was Moats running reds?
That just happened to be the first one?? I doubt that. He most likely ran every red light on his trip to the hospital.
More people could have gone to the hospital because of this.
No argument the officer was a jackoff after the situation had been explained, but how many times do you think the guy has had problems pulling assholes over. |

I thought I heard that, too... perhaps he should be looking at a manslaughter charge. |

I am also very glad she ran on and at least she was there with her mother when her mother passed on.
It is good the officer at least did not detain the entire family.... |

Could he have been a bit more compassionate? Yes.
Moats ran red lights and could have been charged with felony eluding. It's likely that a prosecutor would drop the charges after hearing of the circumstances but Moats took a huge risk continuing to drive to the hospital while the cop had activated his lights and siren.
Moats is lucky the officer didn't follow what is most likely department policy on high risk stops like this and wait for additional units, systematically empty the car at gunpoint, and arrest all occupants.
The cop was a jackass plain and simple, but this could have and most likely would have gone in a completely different direction if Moats had pulled over the second he saw the lights and explained to the officer what was going on. That would have been much more effective than wasting 20 minutes and arguing with the officer in the parking lot. |

My normal trip to work takes approx 19-20 minutes.. I hit the highway with my hazards on a tapping my brights while doing about 95.. Every car, with one exception politely moved over.. The only car that didnt pull over kicked on his lights an sirens and followed me after I passed him..
He just said to "Never do that again, but he understood why I did" Lucky me.. Probably avoided about 10 reckless drive tickets that day |

It is true that there could have been a different outcome, had Moats stopped and told the cop he was on the way to see his dying mother in law in intensive care.
My gut was the cop wanted to cause a problem instead of helping - but it is true Moats should have stopped and hoped for the best that the cop would let him just go on....
