nother 5.6 Richter Earthquake in Tsunami Hit Nicobar Island – Something Strange Happening in the Tectonic Plates
January 27, 2005
India Daily
The bizarre pattern of aftershocks ranging between 5.2 and 6.2 Richter continues in the Tsunami hit Nicobar island of India. According to PTI, another earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit India´s Nicobar Islands today, the Hong Kong Observatory said The earthquake was recorded at 0536 GMT with its epicenter about 345 kilometers northeast of Banda Aceh in Indonesia´s Aceh province.
The tribal people are saying that many miles below the earth’s surface, something is happening they never experienced before.
According to sources, the tectonic level disturbances based on recorded and plotted aftershock quakes, are very slowly moving northwards towards Assam in India.
A theory exist that says the recent massive earth quake in northeast of Banda Aceh in Indonesia´s Aceh province really has its roots in the series of earthquakes in Assam over the last three years. It seems the Andaman plate line of 700 miles may be collapsing. That will be a much larger catastrophe.
India´s remote Andaman and Nicobar archipelago has been hit by a series of aftershocks since a 9.0-strong earthquake off Aceh on December 26 which produced tsunamis that struck shores across the Indian Ocean, killing more than 280,000 people.
The tsunami devastated the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, killing at least 1,925 people and leaving 5,555 missing. More than 42,000 others are still in makeshift camps across the Andaman and Nicobar group.

Recently I have been trying to find your old threads and posts??? They are not in the archives, go figure????? I thought you posted what happened in India to the T before the website went down for a few weeks in Oct? Nov?
It was something like that. I hope you will stick around and if I remember correctly you posted this information and BOOM!!! it was down.
When they came back up you weren´t there.
That gave the feeling that you were the real deal. I wonder if you could post the info. again??? |

Well there are earthquakes almost every day of the year somewhere on the planet. So you will probably win THAT bet. A lot of small quakes and happen under the ocean so they are never felt by anyone at all. Other small ones occur and are felt, but do no real damage.
So somewhere in the world tomorrow a plate is going to slip and produce a 2.0 to 4.0 quake. Why do we care, droping a case of beer generally causes more damage than a 2.0 to 4.0 quake. |

Of course they are!! The 9.0 broke the lock and there are bound to be minor quakes in the region for a while as the plates that have been freed move past each other. They are the inevitable background noise as such titanic plates move past each other. In time they will inevitably lock again.
Quakes in the range that are now occuring are not that dangerous and are what is expected in the aftermath of such a catastrophic unlocking of such a subduction fault. The poster who says that they plates are slipping now is absolutely correct. The plates are indeed slipping even as we speak. They have been slipping past each other since the lock was broken. |

I don´t post here except when I need a laugh or two. I´m sorry I missed that one. :) Well that´s why I usually stick to the earth, the term planet means wanderer and I can´t having my research wandering off... ;)

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:12 AM | | Re: TECTONIC PLATES MAY SLIP ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 30TH, 2005! | Quote | "Let us check"
What are we checking? Yes there are quakes in the region. Yes the plates are moving. I don´t argue either point. This is what happens after a plate has been freed. My question is: So What?
The fault that caused the quake has been unlocked. The fact that there are quakes in that area is a good sign. It means that it may be a while before that plate locks up again; and longer still before enough stress builds up to make it dangerous. It is the last place to worry about at this point.
There are plenty of locked plates in that region and other regions around the world that may cause problems in the next few hundred years. The one that blew is NOT one of them. In the mean time there is a lot of active research going on to better understand tectonic activity so that earthquake predictions and tsunami predictions can become a much more exact science before the next such event. |

I saw that. But I just hate to see someone take the scientific field in which I have labored for so many years and make such complete hash out of it. There is great beauty and great danger in the raw power of nature. One must give it great respect and work with great care to understand it. |
