How do I fix a scratched Vinyl Record
Got a couple of nice vinyls from my salvation army, but they're more scratched then Snoop Doggy Dog's balls.

I need a remedy, GLP GO!

No remedy, sorry. There are services that will *clean* vinyl records, which may help reduce pops and crackles, but physical damage is generally irretrievable. You can also try it yourself using a very weak dishwashing liquid solution, letting the record soak for a while (risk of label damage..), and then VERY gently running a VERY soft toothbrush around the record, following the grooves. Rinse in very clean, pref distilled water, wipe with a microfibre cloth and dry in a non dusty place..

If you have an old sacrificial cartridge/stylus, it may be possible with a steady hand and very good eyesight to 'force (gentle force!)' a groove back through a scratch instead of skipping, but you will still hear a loud noise and this sort of thing is painstakingly difficult and really only for one-offs. (I have done it once, on a prized direct-to-disc recording..)

If you record them digitally, there are quite a few software programs that may help to reduce, even remove, most of the noise.

But dare I suggest you go seek the tracks on the net? After all, you do own them now...

Here is an old home remedy:

120 seconds in a microwave oven. This has been proven to remove scratches.

Make sure you only put 45's in for 1 minute.

Use peanut butter or toothpaste. (At least this can work on CD's) Wipe outwards with a soft cloth.

Re: How do I fix a scratched Vinyl Record
i understand the frustration. i started listening to records as a kid as the industry was killing them off completely. i had a copy of grand funk's red album that
was scratched to pieces. you couldn't by a replacement
for then. due to legal problems it was only available i the uk at the time and out of print everywhere else. it's only recently been re released again on cd. anyways.
someone already mentioned vaseline. it does work on minor scratches which cause the stylus to jump. another trick is to place a nickle or quarter on the stylus itself. sometimes it works so well that the record will no longer skip without the quarter . those are usually just last ditch efforts to copy from record to tape or cd. now days you don't have to go to that sort of trouble to save your rare out of print record. you can find a replacement online.

Man's symbiotic connection with the cosmos will be known and there is nothing which can stop that knowing. Because everything we all do everyday helps confirm that truth. It is just that we haven't reached the pinnacle of where it leads. But we will soon enough. We will either live or die with that knowledge. Between Heaven and Earth is us.

Be brave young warriors in truth.

place it on a newspaper in the driveway so as to not make the scatch any worse. place another newspaper over it and then slowly run your car backwards and forwards over it two to three times. the pressure will force the vinyl to reallign and the scratch will be gone.

Actually vinyl might make a come back after TSHTF. Maybe if the Ruskies or whoever fry all our electronics that will be the only way to go. Those old gramophone's will suddenly become prized possessions.

Granma comes back into style!
Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
Psa 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
Jer 6:2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate [woman].
STOCK UP NOW. You should have at least 6 months worth of basics for every member of your household. Stay away from crowds when trouble starts, do not forget water storage, tobacco is worth more than gold or silver, and be kind to hungry children.

I'm pretty sure that will make things worse.

What the OP needs to do is hold a lit match or lighter under the scratched surface about 2 inches from the record for about 10 seconds. This will slowly melt the scratch away. Here is a link.

Re: How do I fix a scratched Vinyl Record
They can be " improved."

Soak the record a few minutes in water and some fairly mild dish detergent ( like Palmolive ) to soften the dirt.

Take a terrycloth and wash out the grooves with a circular motion. If the record is downright filthy, scrub the grooves with a natural bristle brush. Rinse very well with water under pressure.

Spray the record with Armoral, remove the excess and dry.

Voila. A much quieter record.
