Fireplace cooking: "String-Roasting" a Chicken & More
I just came across these references to fireplace cooking, from centuries past. I have a fireplace I could have been grilling in over coal all winter! This is much better than trying to find propane for an emergency/disaster stove.

First is how to "string roast" birds (chickens, turkeys) in front of your fireplace. You suspend the bird close to the opening of your fireplace and it turns itself! You put a drip pan under it and baste it from time to time.

The second is called a "Tuscan grill". It's basically a cast iron grill on legs that you set into your fireplace over a bed of goals and you grill in your house that way!

There's also something called a "Fireplace crane" that is a cast iron arm that swings out over the fireplace that you can hang a cast iron casserole from.

You have to build a coal fire a little differently than a wood fire.

Great ideals!
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

I have helped with a pit roast once.

I've never spit roasted or cooked in my fireplace.

Just a small pile of charcoal briquets under the tuscan grill, and you have an indoor grill!

So romantic, too. This would be so great with some whiskey and a real wood fire on a winter night!

This was just a grate laid over a burn barrel. It took me a couple of episodes to get past the term "gutbucket". I managed, though. ;)

I have a propane fireplace, but the above does sound neat.
