Do you all have employees? I guess you just "Do it all yourselves because your bad ass mother fuckers who answer to no one"

We don't live in 15th century a barter style economy or culture. Its 2011, there are certain realities. We leverage each others time, energy and expertise...

some of us. most of us. have to be employees. Otherwise our children will starve to death.

were such pussies , aren't we?

You may need to be an employee today, but you don't have to STAY an employee forever.

Being an employee is more of a "comfort zone" than anything.

It's fucking scary as fuck to step out of that realm and start risking shit on a business idea. I understand that because I did it. I know exactly how scary that shit is - ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS!

Nothing says you have to do it all at once. Start a side business and work it part time - that's what I did. At some point, if it works, you'll start making more money with it than you are at your job and you'll reach the point where you see that working for another man is a waste of your time and is actually COSTING YOU. Then, you'll know it's time to make the switch.
Assets feed you, liabilities eat you.

Re: Creed of The Self-Employed
I do not choose to be a common person. It is my right to be uncommon- If I can. I seek opportunity-not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk;To dream and to build; To fail and succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; The thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia.

Will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; To think and act for myself; To enjoy the benefits of my creations; And to face the world boldly and say, this I have done.

All this is what it means to be self-employed.

Suggested a pin.

Dead on, and righteously, eloquently put.

Being self-employed taught me to persevere even through the most difficult of times.

Being self-employed is the epitome of being free and being fearless even when you are terrified.

Kudos and thank you.

42 years remodeling homes and businesses and still working. Wouldn't have it any other way. Seldom hire anyone to help. Crawled under an old ranch house yesterday to replace a non-draining pipe, feels good to still do "hard" work. I trade the checks for lawful money at the bank and nobody takes any for taxes. Learn any and all the trades if you want security.

I mostly agree with the above, but the bit about face the world is a bit over the top.

I don't really give a damn about the world. If it was empty, I'd do exactly what I'm doing. There's no need to announce to ANYONE what I have done.

I know that already.

For those that are inclined, one can always be and "employee" with the internal spirit of an entrepreneur. One can do right by the employer(customer), yet never surrender his dignity, and always look for the win/win situations that characterize the true independent. A good employer will accept that gratefully.

Of course, stupidity like "drug" tests must always be refused or avoided. Any organization that insists on such a thing can be regarded as criminal and treated as such.

Re: Creed of The Self-Employed
I am self employed have been for 20 years I cut hair, I love it at times and I can't stand it at times, I find it utterly sick how some races expect you to do so much for them it's not funny, I am a girl maybe that is why, I have kicked so many people out of my hair it's sad. It's basically one specific race that bothers me to no end. They actually think I owe them the world and it's sad I tend to mess the hair up on purpose only because. They only know small, medium and large for a haircut mind you I am a barber. By the time I have cut this persons hair the 5th time it's a buzz cut. Why not tell me that to begin with and no tip of course, I wouldn't take a hand out either, but I also don't like being treated as if I should be the low man on the list. This wasn't like this 4 years ago and it's sad. Sorry this may be off topic but I just wanted to share how I feel about my job and being self-employed and how I think people think you owe them something because you are self-employed.
