Recession hits New York brides
Published: April 12, 2009 at 1:29 PM

NEW YORK, April 12 (UPI) -- Brides in New York appear to be among the victims of the recession, with retailers saying more grooms are buying cubic zirconia rings instead of diamonds.

New York Diamond District retailers said an increasing number of would-be husbands are purchasing the fake diamonds for their brides' engagement rings to save money during the economic downturn, the New York Post reported Sunday.

"There are people who will buy a setting and put a CZ in it for now, hoping to replace it later," private jeweler Shella Eckhouse said of the recent trend.

"The budget used to be $65,000. Now it's closer to $10,000," she said.

Ackerman added that not all brides appear to be happy with the cost-cutting measures of their potential spouses.

"The women are little hostile about it," Ackerman told the Post. "They have been waiting a long time for a ring!"

That's what's wrong with these bitches today.

They don't give a shit about the guy, it's all about
the bling.

I can understand why men won't marry these women, and
instead live with them.

Luxury jeweler Kara Ackerman said some of those grooms not purchasing cubic zirconia settings are instead turning to one-carat diamond rings instead of the more traditional and expensive two-carat rings.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 625211

Why would anyone want a two-carat diamond? That's gaudy!

The price of diamonds is supported only by cartels regulating supply. If that were to break down, the price of diamonds could collapse tomorrow. Even a $10K ring could dive to $2K.

Crazy to put big $$ into something that has a value created by market supply fictions.

Re: Recession hits New York brides
Cubic Z's are FINE imo

The famous NY City jeweler Harry Winston once said ... "I am selling Love, not diamonds" ... If the love is there then she would be happy with a Cubic Z

A couple of years ago just out of my separation I was dating a great woman who for some strange reason fell madly in love with me. I didn't have much money, coming out of the separation and with child support issues, and she just flat out told me that a Cubic Z was fine with her!! As far as she was concerned she just wanted a nice setting because the ring was for others to see ... it wasn't about the amount of money I spent on her, but the love it represented.

Unfortunately I decided it was WAY too early after my separation and I sort of bolted for the door, but as far as I am concerned her attitude about a ring is how EVERY WOMAN who REALLY LOVES her man should feel. It is NOT about the money spent ... but about the symbolism that the ring represents.
