Dogs are filthy/unclean animals under islam (akin to the way they see pigs) which is why you'll never see an observant muslim family with such a beast in their house.
The only possible exception (and it's pretty dubious at best) is if it's a "working" animal which can be used to circumvent the qu'ranic interpretation.
SO, it's interesting how he chose an animal specifically bred for working purposes. Look into the broodline, the genetic history - these are work-animals.
