How deep is solar minimum?
Consider this: The most powerful solar explosions are now moving in slow motion. "Lately, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have become very slow, so slow that they have to be dragged away from the sun by the solar wind," says researcher Angelos Vourlidas of the Naval Research Lab. Here is an example from April 11th:

Each second in the SOHO animation corresponds to an hour or more of real time. "The speed of the CME was only 240 km/s," says Vourlidas. "The solar wind speed is about 300 km/s, so the CME is actually being dragged."

Vourlidas has examined thousands of CMEs recorded by SOHO over the past 13 years, and he's rarely seen such plodding explosions. In active times, CMEs can blast away from the sun faster than 1000 km/s. Even during the solar minimum of 1996, CMEs often revved up to 500 or 600 km/s. "Almost all the CMEs we've seen since the end of April 2008, however, are very slow, less than 300 km/s."

Is this just another way of saying "the sun is very quiet?" Or do slow-motion CMEs represent a new and interesting phenomena? The jury is still out. One thing is clear: solar minimum is more interesting than we thought.

"We believe we can now predict when a CME will hit Earth with only 3-hours of uncertainty," says Angelos Vourlidas of the Naval Research Lab, who helped develop the model. "That's a four-fold improvement over older methods."

under the surprising shape of solar storms.

"Almost all of the 40-plus CMEs we have studied so far with STEREO have a common shape--akin to a croissant."

could the shape also be the result of or result in the difference of perceived motion of sunspots?

Re: How deep is solar minimum?
the Sun is dead. The scalar killshot was delivered on March 25, 2007. Who 'killed' it? An offworld group of serious menace. But since we are absolutely convinced that no such group could possibly exist, then we must simply limp along under our assumptions while they do not play out.

((sigh)) As for Solar activity...the dying process of the Sun means that it will emit each year one of its 15 Hydrogen rings. The next one is due towards the end of May, so look for solar activity then.

There is a dampening field surrounding earth to keep us from the brute force of these rings, but the evidence of solar flare, etc. should still be evident and increase with each succeeding ring.

I would say, "Source, Help Us All." But Source already is. Waking up would be nice though. I mean...the world is falling apart. How about giving folks a chance to help with the process of getting beyond this point?

geez, what a mess these creeps like to make of things.

Its cold outside and theres going to be a more bearable summer where you dont sweat and suffocate as much , unless you live in the south, then it will still be unbearable.

i hear ya. so dramatic, wears me out..but it has to go thru the process. all the speculating of the crowd got to me, but still, i listen in, creeping myself out like i am beholding a train wreck and can't turn away.

very interesting! We dont need the warning yet but it will be handy when (or if) the sun starts getting active again.

As for the croissant shape... this is interesting too. Its like it becomes enlonged and fat in the middle.

if you're just going to make up bullshit, you can at least try to be more creative. That is just boring crap... try harder next time, lazy ass.
