Before the American Revolution of 1776, citizens threw tea into the Boston Harbor to protest taxation without representation. It's a little more complicated, but that's the gist of it.

Today, in the US, we find ourselves in a similar situation.
Although the government is supposed to represent We The People, they have continued to ignore us.
Such as, the bail outs. By a 300-1 margin, US citizens called, emailed, and wrote to our representatives in Washington DC demanding they vote No Bail Out. They completely ignored us. They didn't read the legislation, took payoffs from Goldman Sachs & the banksters for their votes, and became traitors.
Obama is continuing with this, trillions of dollars, & the goverment plans to send the bill to us, our kids, our grandkids. We keep saying no, and they keep saying f'k you to us.
While they say we are getting tax relief, they raise taxes even more on things that we purchase.
The banks and credit companies who took bailouts are now hiking fees which will force more people to default, creating more economic problems, for which they will come back for more bailouts.
We have a bankrupt government printing up counterfeit paper and giving counterfeit bailouts to crooks.

So, enough is enough. We may not all have been able to throw tea into Boston Harbor today, but hundreds of thousands of US citizens protested today by having Tea Parties 2009 style.
We are also sending mostly used up old tea bags by mail to our representatives.
The message should be clear. But so many of them have ignored the Constitution, that I wonder if they even know what the original Tea Party was about. They will learn the hard way if they don't wake up and remember that they work for us. And we said NO MORE !

But I think it is peoples protest (or better the opposition's activity) to the government, in connection with the Tax day. (Anti-tax 'tea parties')

It is taken from an event when the British taxed the tea import to the US and the people protest against this tax by not buying tea. Something like this.

Colonial America, December 16, 1773
In 1770, American protests led to Parliament's repeal of the Townshend duties — except for the duty on tea retained by the British as a matter of principle. The colonists demonstrated their displeasure with the remaining tax by drinking smuggled tea. The effectiveness of American resistance was shown in the precipitous decline in tea sales in the colonies — a drop of 70 percent over three years.


In 1773 Parliament passed the Tea Act, which gave the English East India Company a chance to avert bankruptcy by granting a monopoly on the importation of tea into the colonies. The new regulations allowed the company to sell tea to the colonists at a low price, lower than the price of smuggled tea, even including the required duty. The British reasoned that the Americans would willingly pay the tax if they were able to pay a low price for the tea.

On November 28 the Dartmouth arrived in Boston harbor with a cargo of Darjeeling tea. Samuel Adams and other radicals were determined that the cargo would not be landed in the city. His mobs roamed the streets in the evenings, threatening violence if challenged by the authorities. Governor Thomas Hutchinson was equally belligerent and vowed not to capitulate in the face of public opposition as had happened in other colonies.

Two other ships, the Beaver and the Eleanor, arrived with more consignments from the East India Company. Hutchinson remained firm and stated that the cargoes would be brought ashore and taxed in compliance with the law.

The Tea Act required that the requisite tax be collected within 20 days of a ship’s arrival, making December 16 the deadline. Sam Adams kept public fervor high by holding public meetings in the Old South Meeting House; crowds as large as 5,000 clogged the surrounding streets.

At one of these gatherings, a resolution was adopted that asked the consignees to return the tea. Those tea agents, some of them relatives of the governor, refused to do so. On December 16, the owner of the Dartmouth agreed to sail his ship back to England. This opportunity to ease tensions was abruptly ended, however, when British officials denied permission for the ship to clear the port and began preparations to seize the vessel for nonpayment of the tax.

That evening the ship owner reported his inability to depart from Boston to the throng at Old South. With that news Adams gave a signal to the group and loud Indian war whoops broke out. A group of some 50 men, unconvincingly disguised as Mohawk Indians, moved the short distance to Griffin’s Wharf where the three ships were moored.

The vessels were boarded, the cargo carefully taken from the holds and placed on the decks. There, 342 chests were split open and thrown into the harbor. A cheering crowd on the dock shouted its approval for the brewing of this “saltwater tea.”

The “Tea Party” was quickly restaged in other port cities in America and tended to polarize the sides in the widening dispute. Patriots and Loyalists became more ardent about their views.

Parliament and King chafed at the destruction of private property and the deliberate flouting of royal authority. They would soon turn to sterner actions.

the continuous use of the word "teabagging" in the media is evidence that they are purposefully trying to turn this into some kind of sick joke. fox knows that a very large majority of its viewers will hear that word and instantly think JOKE which will automatically cause the viewer to not take any of this seriously.

OK. Now I'm a little confused I think. So teabagging is also a historical term that refers to what the American colonists did to the British to start the Revolution? I wonder if Shuster was actually referring to this definition when he used the term and my co-workers were laughing because they were too ignorant to know the historical meaning of the word --- and instead just assumed it was the Urban meaning because they are perverted a-holes.

TEAPARTY=having a public revolt against some sort of governmental law or policy. As in party means 'group of people'

Historicaly for Boston it was over taxed tea being thrown into the water by a group of people. Thus, teaparty. Today, since water is not everywhere the teaparty people have adopted the name to represent both the collective ire against the government AND taxation.

So I suppose you could have a teabagging party which sounds pretty wild, but you'd be very unlikely to find a teabagging teaparty, unless the government starts to impose a tax on sucking on a guys balls.
