Study finds pirates 10 times more likely to buy music
Quote

[link to www.guardian.co.uk]

"Piracy may be the bane of the music industry but according to a new study, it may also be its engine. A report from the BI Norwegian School of Management has found that those who download music illegally are also 10 times more likely to pay for songs than those who don't."

-----

"Wisely, the study did not rely on music pirates' honesty. Researchers asked music buyers to prove that they had proof of purchase.

The paper's conclusions emerge just as Sweden's Pirate Bay trial comes to a close. Pirate Bay's four defendants, who helped operate the notorious BitTorrent tracker, were sentenced to a year in jail and fined 30m SEK (£2,500,000) in damages."

-----

of course piracy leads to sales. i know it does for me. 75% of all cd's i bought last year were put out by bands i only knew from "illegally" downloading their music. one artist i found thanks to shady downloads, i ended up seeing him live twice, bought shirts and cd's at his concerts, bought "legit" copies of all his cd's, and i turned many people onto this guy.

Re: Study finds pirates 10 times more likely to buy musicQuote

indeed.

free source music is more advertisement than anything. people like to have access to a large variety so they can get different versions and variety of music they like.

sure, some may not buy the music later, but that is not near the number of people who will buy

album art, concert tickets, and band label paraphernalia are great drives for purchase

When cds stop selling for 10-20 times the cost of production, then i will start buying them. Until then i refuse to pad the pockets of studio execs who fleece the artists out of most of the the cd sales profits anyway.

Like i'm gonna give some douche with a pony tail 15 bucks when i can get the shit for free.

Exactly! My experience has been the same.

I hate to buy a CD only to find that I only like one or two songs and the rest is crap. Some music gets tiresome after a couple of plays. On the other hand, the music that I really like I prefer to have legit copies. I've bought a lot more music since I've been able to sample things online.

The greedy bastards running the music companies are pissing on their best customers. I revel in the opportunity to download self produced independent music. I downloaded a CD recently that was recorded in a home studio and distributed online. I'd ten times rather pay the artist directly. Let the big record companies go to hell!

The same is also true for software programs. I've purchased many a program after I downloaded it and used a keygen to use it. Software companies that let you use their free version I usually end up purchasing the full version.
But hollywood and the RIAA are far to greedy to do something like that. It won't be long before, free radio music will be a thing of the past. And music can only be purchased through XM radio or something similar.
