And I really think my neighbors would complain. I want it to look some what "nice", not like out our way trailer park. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 661608if you are that hot then who gives a shit what your neighbors think? they sell foil at party centers in different colors, like blue, gold or red. if it was good enough for Elvis, then why not the rest of us? and I learned this when living in Texas, when the sun sets and the house is still hot, put your sprinkler on the roof and let it run for about 45 minutes, the evaporation will cool your house off. |

So what I need are ideas on how to go about (cheaply) blocking the heat from a west facing window. Any ideas? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 661608Aluminum foil. |

mercury2 User ID: 138606 France 04/21/2009 08:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Years ago, I had three big west facing sash windows in my living room, with nothing outside to shade them. The heat was bad but the glare was even worse. I did something kind of like what Duncan said, but I made it be removeable, and made it be so you could still have the windows open for air. I got three sheets of Fome-Cor board, that styrofoam core art board you get at art supply stores. I think they were 40x60. I covered one side with foil, and made three holes at the top of each sheet. I put nails at the top of the window frame to hang the sheets off of. There was a gap at the bottom so the window could be open. I could easily take them off the nails and lean them against the wall if I wanted to see out. I called it my air conditioner - it made the hugest difference! All the difference in the world. There is no reason why the foil couldn't be covered with white fabric or even white paper. It would still do the same thing I am sure, but look nicer from the outside. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 730349 Canada 07/20/2009 03:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Styorfoam. 4x8 sheets cut to the size of the window like the other person stated is what I use. I have sunshine on 8 windows and a door with a window. Styrofoam shows white to the road so people think it is closed blinds. My thoughts, Cheers, caper |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 730193 United States 07/20/2009 03:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Buy a MAC. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 661608He said "cheaply". However, you can cut a one-inch thick piece of Styrofoam to fit into the window casement, and cover the outside facing side with aluminum foil. To increase the fashion cool in addition to the temperature cool, you could line the inward-facing side of the Styrofoam with fabric stretched and held in place with push pins. Try to get a fabric which brings out some of the colors in both the walls and the bed-spread, of course. (This will work in the United States. However, if you live in the UK, you must replace the aluminum foil with aluminium foil). Many thanks!!! This is the best idea. We use it in reverse in Alaska when it gets really cold, to keep heat from going out the windows cheaply. Thermax actually works better than styrofoam, it is foil faced closed cell foam and very durable. Comes in 4 x 8 sheets. You cut it to the size you want with a serrated knife. Measure carefully and cut it so that it just 'press fits' into the window casing. When weather cools off, store it somewhere handy. A little more expensive than styrofoam, but won't break apart and will last for years and years. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 692625 United States 07/20/2009 04:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Go to Home Depot and buy the do it yourself screen frames (in the screen door isle section -0 usually a black or burnt bronze color), you cut them to any size and put screen in them. Next buy 4 thumb type fasteners [link to www.pearsonfastener.com] They look like the above picture but instead of the stem coming down the ones you need have a hole where you use a screw to old the rotating holder down. These rotate around so that when you get the screen window frames put together they hold them snug against the outside window. Next get the solar screen from Home Depot - the stuff that eliminates like 95% of the heat and light. Cut the frames so that the overall size is about an 1" or 2" BIGGER than the outside size of the window. Install the heavy duty SOLAR SCREEN (MUST BE SOLAR SCREEN) in the frame. Screw 4 holders on the outside of the window, one on bottom, top, and both sides. Position them so that they rotate over the frame and keep it tight against the outside of the house wall but over the window. This cost me about 2-3 hundred about a year ago to do 9 large windows. Well worth the money. Keeps the heat and light out and has significantly reduced my cooling costs. Cheaper than going the double pane window route. Also, if you have a certain side of the house that gets a lot of sunlight you can use the screen in conjunction with solar tint on just those windows. I used the solar tint on my back windows that get most of the sun during the afternoon and it helped alot as well. |

They're large and will block out the sum. They're cold blooded and will cool the house. Quoting: Nigel Rumpley 659967:1rofl1: I was going to suggest taping those emergency silver mylar blankets to the window, but the brontosaurus would work just as well. |

[link to www.ebay.com] use bubble wrap between 2 layers of curtain/shade so one can only see curtain from the outside the house & inside. |
