Need to stop heat from coming in windows cheaply. Any ideas?
Well this heatwave is underway in AZ, and I am not going to turn on the A/C in April. So what I need are ideas on how to go about (cheaply) blocking the heat from a west facing window. Any ideas?

Funny............ very funny. Window is shut, and the blinds are closed. You can stand within 3 feet of the window and feel the heat coming thru.

Still winter in Missouri. Try window tint, or a shade.

Use aluminized film on the outside of the window. This will reflect heat before it gets to the glass.

blinds on the outside.

just keeping out the solar heat gain will help.

vertical blinds might be necessary on the west and east

buy some of the film plastic that is used on automobiles to darken the windows. It's applied with a squeegee just moisten the window trim with an exacto knife.
Another choice would be an awning but they cost a few bucks

He said "cheaply".

However, you can cut a one-inch thick piece of Styrofoam to fit into the window casement, and cover the outside facing side with aluminum foil.

To increase the fashion cool in addition to the temperature cool, you could line the inward-facing side of the Styrofoam with fabric stretched and held in place with push pins.

Try to get a fabric which brings out some of the colors in both the walls and the bed-spread, of course.

(This will work in the United States. However, if you live in the UK, you must replace the aluminum foil with aluminium foil).

By the way, OPie, my bedroom and computer room are on the southwest-facing side of my home in Mesa.

You know heat is an issue with me!!

quick fix: aluminum foil then hang a quilt or doubled up heavy blanket over the window.

you could also use that stiff insulating foam, it looks like styrofoam, cut to size.

try to rig a tarp outside to shade the wall. wet down the outside walls with a hose a couple of times each afternoon.

Put a brontosaurus in front of the window. They're large and will block out the sum. They're cold blooded and will cool the house.

My niece used to live in Phoenix. She and her husband went to either Lowe's or Home Depot and bought some screen frame "kits" which you could custom size to your windows. They purchased some sun-blocking screen and installed it in the frames just like regular screening. Was advertised as blocking 95 percent of the heat from penetrating the screen but you could still see outside from the inside. Putting your hand up to the window you could not feel any heat at all.

You see it often as well in places far north in the summer not for heat but for light to keep the room dark when it is like 20 hours day... and 4 hours night.. I have to do my room at night or I never sleep but the room is always cool.. and dark...
I really am not nearly as interesting as I should be but I certainly will try to find interest in nearly everything I can be. self quote.

Any local home supply store (Lowe's/Home Depot) should have it in stock. Usually comes in 36" wide rolls of 15-20 feet.

You need to provide some kind of insulation.

One way is make a frame the size of the window, then cover it with plastic, the heavier the better ((20 mil, maybe 30 mil). A few small screws will hold it in place.

Another way is to cover the inside of the windows with aluminum foil. Though THAT can make it look like you're making drugs.

Re: Need to stop heat from coming in windows cheaply. Any ideas?
I have thought of using foil, but like you mentioned I don't want it to look like we are a drug house. And I really think my neighbors would complain. I want it to look some what "nice", not like out our way trailer park.
