Ignorance is the root of fear Fear is the kindling of anger War is the bringer of shame But never has the burden lain so heavily upon the victim Rage and desolation Pain and loneliness Isn't it all alarmingly familiar? Hey, hey, hey, silence is a killer. |

Science has gone to Hell starting with NIST. Heck if NIST can say that building just fall down in powdered concrete and 45-degree sliced 30-foot I-Beam sections for no apparent reason other than a small office fire, then I suppose a group of Waco people can boo a scientist saying that the moon doesn't generate its own light, eh? Science if FUCKED starting with NIST. You should know that NIST sets your atomic clocks... and has the reliability of a piece of stale dog shit scientifically. |

Derka says : At this point, several people in the audience stormed out, including woman with three small children who shouted, "We believe in God!" and left. Quoting: DerkaBut the Examiner blog says : "At this point, several people in the audience stormed out, including woman with three small children who muttered, "We believe in God!" and left." Waco Tribune story says : "A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence. “We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children." What really happened? No booing reported by anyone but OP. Some people left, but did anyone really know the reason why? This is like the Telephone Game. |

But apparently it did happen. [link to www.wacotrib.com] |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 585054 United States 04/23/2009 07:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Trouble started when the children's entertainer brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars," and pointed out that the lesser light was actually a reflector. No where in Genesis 1:16 or even into the 6th Chapter of Genesis is the Moon every even mentioned, only mention of "month" starts in Genesis 6. Also, The Lesser Light to Rule the Night. The Moon simply does not qualify for this function as unlike the Sun which is always visable in the daytime sky and the predominate light visable from all over Earth in its day time, the Moon in its travels cannot be said to rule the night from New Empty Moon until the next week, and the last week after the wanning Moon. The Lesser Light IS the Milkly Way Galaxy. Bill Nye is basically right, although there are occasional flashes of light on the Moon that come from meteor impacts or volcanic action. |

I do believe that fundamentalists perceive life as a constant series of challenges. At any moment and around every corner lurks the Devil, there to turn you from the path of righteousness. Thus their suspicious reaction to most of the sciences..."Watch out, Mabel, that looks like a Science. Keep an eye on it and don't let it burn our bibles like it wants to!" |

Bingo Bob User ID: 645156 United States 04/23/2009 07:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's not just a problem with Christianity -- IT'S ALL RELIGION. All of them are equally ridiculous - it's funny to me when people make fun of Scientology so much yet they think christianity is somehow less insane...or prone to ridicule. Americans are the ONLY developed western country IN THE WORLD where the people STILL believe in some god in the sky watching them...in whatever form he takes in their religion. Religion is holding America back....Texas and the rest of the South is a prime example. Being ignorant has become a virtue to them "We don't want to hear the truth! We don't need to hear reality! We don't care if science has proven something new! We believe in God!!!" |

We can see the moon, therefore it's giving off light, but that light reflects from the Sun. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 581488Christian here too, and I see nothing wrong with what Nye said. Had those "chuch ladies" been listening in science class they would know the moon does not have sufficient mass or fuel to become a star (a source in the heavens that gives off it's own light) and listened to the remainder of Nye's speech. |
