Any shade-tree mechanics on?
Just tried to change the radiator fluid in my truck.
All went well till I tried to refill it. Can only get about 1/2 gallon water in it.

I feel like it is not getting any air so would it hurt my engine if I started it to get the water to pumping as I add more fluid?

Yeah, you need to start it. Turn on the heater too.

Re: Any shade-tree mechanics on?
Don't run water only. Anti-Freeze lubricates your water pump bearing, without it? Bearing lasts about a week and water pump is shot.

You should be able to start it ok...thermostat is probably closed...fill the over flow, add fluid as it runs, don't over fill and you should be fine.

Ok thanks ET

Thought starting might help, did not think about the heater.

Yes I was going to add coolant also. See what you mean about the overflow.

SHR makes a good point about needing anti-freeze. You should really be using distilled water too. Lots of minerals in most tap water, which can cause build up in your radiator.

This is the first time I have ever tried changing the radiator. Only the oil before.

But I am a 61 years old woman. So am not a mechanic.

Thanks for the help, guys.

This is also true...store water is cheap for the non spring water stuff...it does help some. I'm sure we've all run tap water though at one time or another, depending on how your water is, it's not usually deadly...lol...:)

You have to let it run long enough to get hot so the thermostat valve opens

You have air trapped in the cooling system. The way I get it out is, let it run at idle with the cap off. Dont stand directly over it cause it will burp and gurgle. Watch the temp guage and make sure it does not overheat. Keep adding fluid untill all air is out of system. Probably take 30 minutes or so.

Thankee, thankee LOL

Little side note - went to a jiffy lube two weeks ago to have my oil changed for the first time ever (usually do it myself).
But I checked it a few days ago and it had too much oil so yesterday I drained almost 2 quarts from my truck. It still has too much but it is better than before. How could a professional make such an error?

Guess I will go back to changing it myself.

Ever run that "Water Wetter" from Redline in your 5.0?....that shit is guuuud....Buddy of mine that built Boss Hosses recommened it and that was one fussy dude there. Always had cooling problems them bikes, but he swore by that stuff once he discovered it, said it dropped overall running temps a solid 10 degrees plus.

It is supposed to make the coolant have way more contact with the surface area of the system...kinda makes the coolant fill in all the nooks and cranies it wouldn't normally contact...interesting dynamic...I think you can use it with or without reg anti-freeze.

Most people don't know this, but human urine is the best anti-freeze. Piss in your radiator at every opportunity. Be careful not to burn the tip of your dick. Don't thank me, your satisfaction is all the thanks I need.

I am a mechanic...if you just drained the fluid out of the peacock valve and refilled it than yes you would only be getting about 1/2 gallon back in...but as posted earlier use antifreeze too!!!!!!! 50/50 mix, once it is filled to the top, put the cap back on, start your engine let it run for about 15 minutes turn off engine, remove cap and add more if needed. RECHECK LEVEL AFTER 1-2 DAYS OF DRIVING, YOU WILL NEED TO ADD MORE!!! What's happening is since you opened the cap, you let air into the system and it needs to "burp" once it does you will need to add a bit more! Good luck!

Yeah sure it is, just make sure you add lots of pepper too to prevent leaks. Most also don't know that Crisco is the best oil too because it doesn't smoke...I never buy a used car unless the dipstick smells like Fried Chicken.

Re: Any shade-tree mechanics on?
Did you disconnect both sides and flush it with a hose and run it a little to pump out the old fluid?
Did you turn the heater to ON?
Does your system have an air bleeder nozzle?
I did mine a while ago, replaced thermostat and pump.
And when I refilled it, it didnt take the amount of coolant/water mix that the manufacturer stated in there book.
And I talked to a few others with the same car, and they said they had the same thing.
I was told by manufacturer this could be because they rate it on a brand new radiator.
And over years the radiator fins get damaged and corroded and filled with gunk and hold less fluid.
You are supposed to refill them cold, because it expands when its hot.
But you have to run it a little for it to circulate.

Well the Boss Hosses always had cooling troubles...I guess because there is no shroud...this guy was real picky about getting everything as correct as possible with them and actually he did cure several problems that they always had and other builders followed his lead. He was also real hard headed...lol..once he had something? no one could dynamite him off it....he had a certain dual fan he used and that was that....I saw him once with a bike that was almost all done and waiting on that fan for a few day back order...these are like 30k+ bikes depending on the build and the customer was getting ants his pants....lol...he told the guy to ride the thing right into a fuckin canal if he put a different fan on it and never come back....lol....he was a funny dude.....but his shit worked when others failed...
