Doesn't anyone else feel that this Swine Flu is just one more diversionary tactic to keep us living in fear?

well yes... but there is people here who is dying for this evil plan.
 Quoting: fërú.

What a horrible undoing for mankind is this... as if there were not already enough major challenges to face just for some irrational behaviour on the part of some that might think they are wise... while it is mostly the opposite.

Take care people, this seems very serious. I am quite upset for what is happening and how it seems to be developing.

Take care, all the best for a better mankind, for a world of peace and rationalism, tolerance and sharing, intelligent actions, respect and real sustainability to come. Have hope and tighten efforts. We can make a better world and perhaps we can undermine... evil, idiotic plans.

Best hopes for a better world ; )

just heard on CNN that 300 people are in Mexican hospitals with symptoms like the swine flu right now.

the numbers that we hear should probably be tripled or quadrupled imho

if the official dead count is 87 across the country and feru is reporting 200 dead in one hospital alone...well you get the picture...

Feru isnt reporting it, he is posting an article from someone who is reporting it, as an anecdote. It is possible there are 200 deaths in one hospital, The point is are they deaths from the virus in question? Speculation, rumor, misonfo or fact? We dont know, except it us not the official story. Now, what should we think: is the official story underestimated or overestimated? take your pick, both beliefs are rampant on the internet, with complete exposees as to why...

Yes. The report that talks about 200 deaths in one hospital is not substantiated. It is something someone who claims to be a doctor has said and was quoted by a news source as saying, which in turn was shared with us by Feru.

I am not in any way knocking Feru. I think the good thing is that we can look at that story, ask questions and find answers. I mean after all, the above statement was made in a blog comment to BBC news. The comment was posted by an Antonio Chavez (no maternal surname), a very common name. He does not call himself Dr. Antonio Chavez and he does not identify the hospital he works at. I bet there are probably 20 doctors with that name in Mexico. So while interesting, I don't know how trustworthy the comments are.

I have gotten my information now from 3 different doctors that are on the scene, and 2 of them are in positions of authority within their respective hospitals. All of them are family, and none of them are particularly fond of the government or the bureaucracy that often ties their hands in life and death situations. They have absolutely no reason to downplay anything, and they are all exceptional health professionals.

Now of course, you only have my word for that, and this is GLP. I could be making it up, but I am putting it out there because I believe it is a good bit of information to take into account, just as one should ponder what Feru posted.

Before I spoke to my family members, I was concerned, because I have lived through very hard situations in Mexico, where the government did downplay the severity and even deliberately or not impeded positive action initiated by the citizens.

But I have also been in situations where the opposite happened, where mountains were made of molehills for whatever purpose.

I think we need to keep perspective on the problem and be alert. There is a real danger that this could get out of control and Mexico City is a worst case scenario if that were to happen, but hysteria is not going to solve anything. We need to keep a cool head and consider the information. It is really too early to know how this will turn out, but for now, the stories of panic in and death in Mexico City are highly exaggerated.

One thing that I would like to note is that there is a huge population in Mexico City that lives on the margin of all of this. They generally have no access to health care and services, squatters and homeless people that live in extreme poverty and die of curable diseases all the time, and nobody notices. I am sure that more people die like that every day in Mexico City than those that are affected by the swine flu. We really have no way of knowing if this sector of the population is being affected by the virus, because they are largely invisible. I do know people that do charity work in these sorts of areas, and I am trying to find out what they have observed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 553451

True. True. But even if we accept the figure of 87 dead across the country... out of 1,300 infected, why that is 6.7% - That is HORRIFIC.

I have heard or read NO stories of panic in Mexico city, where did you see that?

If you mean that people are staying in doors and not associating with others, well, that is pretty well documented... But not panic.

What are the names of these Doctors in your family? Ask them first of course, but if they are willing to go on record and be contacted to verify their statements, it would help a lot.

There should be no reason why they wouldn't for instance, since you seem to be saying they are in agreement with the government and are allowed to speak out freely.

Otherwise you tale is just as valid as any of the others, perhaps better written, but certainly not in keeping with most of what is being said.

So the burden of proof is on the lone voice to show us the way, not on the masses clambering with minds made up already. (Because they won't do it, ever...)

I can't do this for you, I don't know any Doctors there, especially not ones that would talk of possibly confidential things.

One other thing...

If 1,000 people die of similar symptoms, even if only ten are tested to see if they have a particular virus, and this happens near the same time...Well, then "officially" ten people may be positive for the virus, but unofficially nearly a thousand may have died from it.

What we need are the numbers of respiratory distress leading to death in Mexico city over the last two weeks or so and a baseline for what is "Normal" in those regards.

If there is little to no difference, well, that will clear things up nicely.

If there IS a large sudden difference, then it says something different, at least in potential right?

Can Your Family member Doctors get those stats? they should have them or access to them, correct?

Looking forward to the validation of your post! It will tell us a whole lot and perhaps change some minds once verified.

I trust your words I guess because I have a good sense to know someone who is cautious and measured (someone who would know, or could know) and someone who is not.

It is the same for my health worker contacts here: no cases they are aware of. We have been advised our schools are to be closed till Wednesday. And the governor is speaking to the state in less than an hour, so there should be more to ponder soon.

Yes it is horrific. Hopefully with the alert in place people will go straight to the hospital at the first sign of symptoms, as it is looking like they are successfully treating if caught in the early stages. I am at least hopeful.

April 25-26, 2009 -- SPECIAL BULLETIN. New swine flu feared to be weaponized strain

According to two mainstream media journalists, one in Mexico City and the other in Jakarta, who spoke to WMR on background, they are convinced that the current outbreak of a new strain of swine flu in Mexico and some parts of the United States is the result of the introduction of a human-engineered pathogen that could result in a widespread global pandemic, with potentially catastrophic consequences for domestic and international travel and commerce.

The journalists have been told by top officials of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) about the grave dangers posed by the new and deadly swine flu strain, known as A-H1N1. The flu, never before seen by scientists, has already killed up to 68 people in Mexico and has forced the cancellation of public events, including sports matches and concerts, and the closure of schools, libraries, and museums. Eight cases have been reported in Texas and California and one Texas family is already under a quarantine. Doctors are examining several students at a Queens high school in New York who displayed symptoms similar to those experienced by swine flu patients in Mexico.

Our Mexico City source said a top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, concluded that H1N1 possesses certain transmission "vectors" that suggest that new flu strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon. The UN expert believes that Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and the current A-H1N1 swine flu virus are biological warfare agents.

Past swine flu outbreaks have been spread from pigs to humans, who then passed the flu on to other humans. However, with A-H1N1, there have been no reported infections of pigs. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), A-H1N1 has gene segments from North American swine, bird and human flu strains and a segment from Eurasian swine flu. Costa Rica, Brazil, and Peru have issued alerts to check all incoming passengers from Mexico at border crossings, airports, and seaports for symptoms of the swine flu.

WHO is convening an emergency session of its top medical experts in Geneva and is set to declare H1N1 a "public health event of international concern." It is reported that WHO will recommend travel restrictions to and from areas where the flu has been reported, including Mexico City and the states of Mexico, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Oaxaca.

Our Jakarta source said WHO officials are afraid that the presence of gene segments from dreaded H5N1 bird flu in the A-H1N1 swine flu strain could mean that the new swine flu strain was engineered to "jump species." WMR has been informed that the CDC and U.S. Army dug up the body of an Inuit woman who died in 1918 in Brevig Mission, Alaska from an outbreak of Spanish flu. The influenza pandemic that year killed up to 100 million people worldwide in an 18-month period. Brevig Mission saw 72 of its 80 residents die within five days, the worst case recorded anywhere in the world. WMR has been told the genetic material recovered by the U.S. government from the corpse of the Inuit woman provided the basis for the development of the H5N1, or bird (avian), flu strain at the U.S. Army Medical Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the point of origin for the Ames strain of anthrax used in the 2001 bio-war attacks against the U.S. Congress and the media.

The fear in Asia is that if the A-H1N1 pandemic spreads to the United States, travel to and from the country will be all but shut down.

The following are the symptoms associated with A-H1N1:

* cough
* fever
* sore throat
* shortness of breath
* muscle and joint pain

The drugs Tamiflu and Relenza are seen as the most effective against A-H1N1.

The person posted that reports are exaggerated. That people are in panic because of that. ie Panic, Big word, with lots of meanings for the person reading it. It could be as little as buying out stores of certian products, ie face masks, or staying off the streets. I stayed off the streets two days, venturing out today. Got my facemasks at the public clinic for free, they were sold out at the pharmacies from "panic" buying yesterday...

US Armed forces have been placed on alert level 3 with all leave canceled for an indefinite period of time. USNORTHCOM has jurisdictional authority over implementation of provisions of CONPLAN 0500 upon the authorization form your office. Sir, this would mean..."

Having lived through no fewer than 5 natural disasters and political turmoil in Mexico over the years, I can honestly say that Mexicans in general are not given to panic. In crisis situations they are very level headed and capable of spontaneous organization and solidarity. Quite unlike some "developed" countries I have lived in.

Re: The truth of what is happening in Mexico
People please be aware:

+ This seems to be highly contagious
+ Major symptoms are: strong headaches, cough, nasal flux, respiratory pains or problems (congestion i.e.), noticeable fever often above 38.5 or 39 degrees celsius, bone and muscle pains.

+ Other symptoms that might come in complicated cases include: stomach/intestinal pain or problems, respiratory failures, inmunologic depression, bacterial infections allowed by the later, cardiovascular and previous disease/deficciency predispositions, hemorragic problems.

+ Aspirin/acetilsalicilic acid is NOT RECOMMENDED, stop it if posible or avoid as it could enhance hemorragic dangers!

+ People with diabetes, cardiovascular, cancer and some other health problems are particularly in danger. Old people and inmunodepressed people too. Everyone must take extreme care on this disease! WORLDWIDE!

What might be done? It seems not clear, but remember:

+ Be aware

+ If suspicious of symptoms isolate yourselves/affected people and give them all attention that is available with asceptic/hygienic measures.

+ Either sick or not, EAT PLENTY of fruit and vegetables containing vitamin C. Take some vitaminic complements with surveyance if possible (do not overdose, specially on fatty/oleic proteins that might bioacumule such as vitamin A) Follow a reasonable diet, sleep well, avoid dusts.

+ Avoid conglomerations of people, cancell major partys and/or events. Better postpone your trips if possible.

+ Use breathing protections at least for stoping infective particles while walking on the street or in public areas, and specially when near a known infected person.

+ Clean yourself tightly, wash and disinfect your hands before eating and/or touching your face... and be careful with greetings and other usual salutations/contacts with people... specially on risky areas.

+ Do not selfmedicate, do not overuse antivirals and antibiotics because this would certainly undermine their collective effects, whatever they might be (on controlling/combating the infection).

+ Have basic tools, first emergency items and some food reservoir instead of attempting frequent visits to the markets and major stores.

+ Avoid overusing your vehicles specially on highly populated areas in order to improve local air quality and contribute to your fellows (or your own) recovery.

+ Try to be happy, fight this threat, always keep hope ; )

Best wishes to all ; ) Take care people, worldwide ; )

Televisa is actually saying the virus is "curable" with available medicines. This is totally at variance with health authorities who say there is limited treatment after exposure, ie virus reacts positively to some treatments within the first 24 hours.

I really cant stand the media's pushing these drugs and emcouraging people to prematurely buy medication to self medicate...

That's the opposite of what they are supposed to do.

Re: The truth of what is happening in Mexico
Televisa is actually saying the virus is "curable" with available medicines. This is totally at variance with health authorities who say there is limited treatment after exposure, ie virus reacts positively to some treatments within the first 24 hours.

I really cant stand the media's pushing these drugs and emcouraging people to prematurely buy medication to self medicate...

That's the opposite of what they are supposed to do.

There is a certain logic to this - I think its treatable if caught early in the infection but people aren't going to the hospital until they are really sick and the antivirals are not effective then. I think a lot of the reports coming from the Mexico city doctors and staff are true from that perspective. They are only seeing the very sick that check into the hospital which is only the tip of the iceberg of all infections and of these only a percentage die.

Unfortunately there is a danger that people will buy the medicines before symptoms, because the TV says there's a cure. Logically the media would qualify their statement as the health authorities specify. And you shouldnt self medicate! Ideally, when you feel sick, go to the hospital or clinic, get diagnosed and receive treatment. Holy shit if these medicines are available without perscription! That's has the potential of strengthening the virus against these limited treatments...

You may be double counting, feru. It is 61 suspicious + 22 confirmed. Not 83 suspicious + 20 confirmed....

People please be aware:

+ Either sick or not, EAT PLENTY of fruit and vegetables containing vitamin C. Take some vitaminic complements with surveyance if possible (do not overdose, specially on fatty/oleic proteins that might bioacumule such as vitamin A) Follow a reasonable diet, sleep well, avoid dusts.

+ Try to be happy, fight this threat, always keep hope ; )

Best wishes to all ; ) Take care people, worldwide ; )

So, you are saying that Vitamin A is not good to take? Most people take vitamin C to protect or heal colds, when it is Vitamin A that we should actually be taking.

Is there a difference when it comes to pandemic flu?

Re: The truth of what is happening in Mexico
This is really confusing..my relatives are saying, in TX, near Mexican border. that they know of no one with it, and no one is in panic mode at all down there...but keeping an eye on it.

The NY kids were in Cancun 2 weeks ago, but then the cruise passengers that just dismbarked said no problems, no big deal, and they saw no one in Cancun sick..

Then there's the lady that shared a crazy story about a truck driver that hauled all this mysterious stuff...and he was vaccinated..promised they'd protect his family..and he was instructed absolutely no gum chewing during this mission..what the heck does gum chewing have to do with virus / bacteria?!!

And if it is legit, what is the connection between the random spots in the world? it would seem to be a SOURCE not a 6 degress of seperation thing..

So....I went and bought the natural stuff just in case..D3....and already keep the garlic, omega 3, C, K, and colloidal silver in stock..so good there!

Our nightly national announcement (Televisa and Calderon)1384 suspected cases, 21 confirmed dead from virus, 60 suspicious. 350 hospitalized. Classes suspended in a few states.

Where's our governor? No word from him. Probably bc he realized the national broadcast was at the same time. Idiot!
