Over-the-counter way to stop my periods?
I'm 47. When I was about 42, a doctor told me about perimenopause. The nurse told me it could take "up to 8 years", for it to all be over-with.
There reason why I don't want to see a doctor or gyno. about this. 1). I don't like those exams. I've had more than one child and enough of those embarrasing exams.
After I had my last baby, I promised myself that I wouldn't have to go through that ever again.
I don't plan on getting cancer or an std, so I don't need any tests.

Please don't respond with any info. telling me how stoopid I am not to subject myself to this because la la la la I can't hear you.

Anyhow, I'm still getting my period with no sign of stopping. Regular as a clock with only a few drenching hot-flashes now and then.

I feel like I got gyped!

I've never taken the pill or any hormones before, and although I wouldn't recommend it for younger women, I really am sick-of riding this monthly roller-coaster.

I'm aniemic for one thing..bla bla,

I know they use the pill to stop periods, and that would be the only reason I'd be using it for. I don't need so much to prevent pregnancy because I'm celibate right now.

What if I bought "plan B" or The morning-after pill and cut it into smaller doses?? Would that be really expensive? I don't plan on using any estrogen at all because I smoke.

What about bio-identical hormones? Could I find & use a safe dose? Just enogh to stop the periods and nothing else.

Menopause varies with age. Why do you expect it at such an early age?...generally it occurs in the 50's age group.

You might have some time yet. Some women get over it with minimal problems, while others can go through hot flashes and other symptoms for years.

Get a tubal ligation already, or a hysterectomy.

I'm with Tessa, reconsider about the exams. Just one could save your life.

A doc told me that taking Aleve 5-7 days before you start your period would lessen the flow and number of days.

I've never researched it.

Take care of yourself.

Um-see I just KNEW you people would have a problem with me not wanting to spread my legs on a cold table!
If there was something weird going-on then of course I would just take a xanax and force myself.
A hysterectomy is out cause I do wanna keep my organs plus that would require exams!
I actually applied for that a few years back, (due to loss of blood etc.) and that's when they told me that I was in "peri". but I'm really getting tired of waiting.

Thanks for the replies, but does anyone have an answer to my question?

Yep. They told me to take Naproxen (Aleeve©) or any NSAID.
(but not anything with asprin) And it actually does slow-down and help with the bleeding.
They told me to take it when it starts though or just before 'till it stops. Something about how NSAIDS affect hormones.

I was told that it should be taken 5-7 days before.

I just googled it and it does come up.

Re: Over-the-counter way to stop my periods?
You have to be period clear for about 2 yrs if you are under 50 to be certain you have got through the menopause.
There really isnt anyway to stop your periods before then unless you have a hystorectomy. There is some types of contreceptive pills that can all but stop a monthly flow but you would have to visit a Doctor.
I know any examinations can be embarrasing, but you say you have had children and its not as if youre a silly young thing! :) Couldn't you try to see if you could have a female doctor to examine you?

-shrug- It is your life. You said you had a child. Do you want to die before he/she is an adult?

My son was 5 when I was diagnosed w/ cancer.

I HATE those exams - because I am allergic to the gloves. I would suffer for 2 weeks after each exam.

If you don't value your life - fine. If you don't care if your child has a mother - well you are just fucking selfish.

Cry baby. Deal with it.

PS Cancer will take away your periods.

Personal responsibility - try it sometime. Quit blaming others for your bad choices. Consequences happen.

You women have allkinds of problems...
My wife went throug menopause and had such bad hot flashes for years (tried all natural stuff too), and finally went to the doctor and got some hormones to lessen the hot-flashes. Now she has periods again. Interweb said she could have them for years. So hot flashes or periods...take your pick.

Re: Over-the-counter way to stop my periods?
Just because i don't want an embarrasing exam does not mean that I will get cancer.!!!

I DO NOT need a perscription to get Plan B. Or the morning-after pill.

A lot of people take the pill to not get a period.

Its the same thing only a different dose.

Dosen't anyone else find it funny that I'm having a hard time finding this info.?

OF COURSE I Googled© it!

Hey OP, no answers here but you are far from alone! I'm 45 yo woman who gave up those exams after baby #3. I also do not let them radiate my breast tissue anymore. I had a conversation with some women at the gym last week and GUESS WHAT?? We're not the only ones.

Re: Over-the-counter way to stop my periods?
I guess I'll just figure it out myself!

I cannot believe that I'm the only one to consider this.

People are really brainwashed.

I cannot get hpv or whatever cervical cancer (what they like to test-for), because I'm celibate! OK-maybe there are other things that cause it, but I'm safe on that one.

Why should I have to do something I really do not want to do to get something that I want? I know the risk and I'm willing to take it.

Yeah those hot flashes are crazy. I haven't been getting them too much lately but I heard that putting your hands in the freezer or in cold water could stop one.

I'm just really sick of the blood and monthly ups & downs.

Re: Over-the-counter way to stop my periods?
My understanding of the Morning After Pill (Plan B) is that it makes the uterine lining extremely inhospitable for a fertilized egg to try to attach to. I have never, ever, heard that it will stop a period. As a matter of fact, most women who would take Plan B are PRAYING to get that next period to prove they're not pregnant.

most of the supposed cancer is just misdiagnosed fibro-cystic condition from lack of proper iodine in the diet.

Re: Over-the-counter way to stop my periods?
I began full-on menopause the very minute that I hit 50 years old. It is great not having periods.

From the ages of 44 to 49, I was a runner. Purely for pleasure, I would get up at 4:30 in the morning and run six hard miles before going to work. In order to run faster, I lightened myself up by dieting until I was going through an entire day while eating no more than a cup of yogurt. Sometimes, I even forgot to do that.

Between the running and the dieting, my periods stopped. Intense physical workouts and loss of body weight will stop your periods.

At 49, I began to slow down a little. I didn't run as much and began to remember to eat food. My periods came back. Then, like I said, I hit 50 years old and my periods stopped for good. Forever.

I don't go to doctors either. After all of those decades of being a fertile female and then being treated as if there was some disaster associated with it, I, too, cannot stand a doctor. Some people want a doctor for various reasons; I don't.
