SeekerMi User ID: 6764 United States 07/06/2009 11:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We raise pigs for butcher, and they ARE very clean animals. Within their enclosure, they create separate eating, laying, and defecating areas. If their water gets too dirty, they tip it over. If pigs stink, it's because someone doesn't clean their enclosure. BTW, their manure is excellent fertilizer. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 629392 United States 07/06/2009 11:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have two pet sows Pinki and Rose.. they are about 6 years old, they have a beautiful pond to lounge in on hot days, they have their own stall full of fluffy clean straw, a feeder which is full of rolled barley and corn.. I love my hogs and any of you who bash pigs really are doing it out of pure stupidity. If you were kept in a wallow living in filthy conditions perhaps you would smell too! My girls know what I am saying to them they have free run of our 80 acre ranch though they only meander around the barn yard. Their home is in the barn where our beautiful Shire horses have stalls, everyone gets along just fine. Oh.. and guess what people they just did research using stem cells from hogs on a alzhiemer experiment the cells help destroy old damaged brain cells replacing them with health new cells. So not only are hogs the closet body parts to humans but they will save lives. They are not dumb by any stretch of the imagination! |

They dont sweat so on hot days they need to cool off by laying in water. Provided with a pool they will use it and never roll around in their pee area. Its only when they dont have a way to cool off that they will have to resort to rolling around in some filth. |

It's man who allows the poor creatures to wallow in filth, in confined places :( Quoting: maluthat is very true, cleaner than dogs, that is for sure, and probably smarter I agree with the above. Swine are not especially dirty, in comparison to other animals. They wallow in mud for the same reasons other animals do - as a sunblock, protection against insect bites, etc. Give them a chance, and they will be no more dirty than any other animal, and have the intelligence to defecate in one spot instead of all over, such as, say, cattle. Neither will they lie upon feces unless there is no choice, unlike cattle. My Grandparents had a pig which always got loose, and none could understand how. As it transpired, the animal was able to open a double action gate, which required the latch to be lifted, pushed, and then pulled, thus allowing the creature to pull the gate open. It appears that swine prefer freedom. Pretty bright for a pig, methinks. Rather doubt my dogs could do that ... but then, it's never been necessary for them. In any event, the OP's original statement is incorrect. |
