Geophysicist 12/08/2005 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You guys crack me up!! Yeah, and an earth quake of sufficient magnitude could shatter the planet, but it isn´t gunna happen!! The largest quake ever recorded was the magnitude 9.5 earthquake in Chile on May 22, 1960 with the big Alaskan quake coming a close second at 9.2. If any of you wizards are still worried on this point, there´s a lot of evidence available indicating that none of the known faults on this planet are capable of generating a magnitude 10.0 or larger earthquake. Watch out for monsters under the bed son!! |

Stop living on the asshole assumptions of the past where all is slow and peaceful and barely noticable. It could cost you your life. |

Geophysicist 12/08/2005 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "That´s pretty neat. I wonder what pushed up the Rocky Mountain Range. And the Andees and the Himalayas. Global farts?" Nope!! Just your average magnitude 7.0 to 10.0 quakes. They´re more than sufficient to product any set of mountains that currently exist as well as many others that have eroded away to nothing. The Appalachian mountains are the roots of a mountain chain that once rivaled the Rocky mountains in hight!! The quakes that produced them were also about 7.0 to 10.0 in magnitude. If you´ve got evidence of quakes of greater magnitude present it!! So far all I see is a lot of waving of hands and maybe´s!! Yeah, well maybe Eleanor Roosevelt could fly, but I doubt it and I´m certainly not gunna accept it just because someone likes the idea. If you have new evidence lets see it. |
Anonymous Coward 12/08/2005 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Faults do not cause earthquakes. EQs are caused by forces (internal and external to varying degrees)acting upon the tectonic plates. EQs rutinely happen AT or ON fault lines because these are the thinest and hence, most vulnerable areas of the plates and the pressure of the forces applied is most easily expressed at the weakest point. That is why, for instance, you fart out your butt-hole instead of somewhere in the middle of your intestines. |

He also agreed with a caller that nuclear testing 50 years ago might be the cause of a 500+ year old phenomena called El Nino. Some source you got there. and always will be |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 14380192 United States 01/09/2014 01:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Eliza Bryan in New Madrid, Territory of Missouri, wrote the following eyewitness account in March, 1812. On the 16th of December, 1811, about two o'clock, a.m., we were visited by a violent shock of an earthquake, accompanied by a very awful noise resembling loud but distant thunder, but more hoarse and vibrating, which was followed in a few minutes by the complete saturation of the atmosphere, with sulphurious vapor, causing total darkness. The screams of the affrighted inhabitants running to and fro, not knowing where to go, or what to do—the cries of the fowls and beasts of every species—the cracking of trees falling, and the roaring of the Mississippi— the current of which was retrograde for a few minutes, owing as is supposed, to an irruption in its bed— formed a scene truly horrible.
