Updated: Swine flu confirmed in Richardson school

Dallas Business Journal

A confirmed case of a young student with swine flu has prompted Richardson Independent School District to close Canyon Creek Elementary School for the rest of the week, a spokeswoman for Richardson ISD confirmed Monday.

The rest of the Richardson school district is open; however, health officials continue to work with the school district to evaluate the situation at Canyon Creek. The school district confirmed two other students are under evaluation -- one of which is probable for swine flu and the other which is suspected. The one confirmed and two suspected cases involve Canyon Creek students.

In addition, another possible North Texas case of swine flu was announced in Tarrant County on Monday. Public health officials in the county said they're investigating a probable case of swine flu that is affecting a 12-year old Tarrant County resident. Authorities say the 12-year-old is “recovering well.”

“We are working closely with the local medical community and schools,” stated Tarrant County Public Health Director Lou Brewer. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) designation of a national public health emergency means that across the nation and here locally, related resources will be on standby to help coordinate the response.”
