xp installation on sata HD..... Help.....Please

Go into the BIOS and disable anything that says "legacy support". Your SATA controller must have been an add-on to the original MB. Also, make sure the SATA controller is enabled.

All else fails... install Ubuntu and use GRUB to dual boot and add XP to a different partition.

Okay I have seen this term referred to quite often. When I make the copy with SP3 do I just put it in the root directory?

well somethings not right - ATAPI drivers are inherently installed which is why dvd/cd drives just work when you plug a new one in for example. Bear that in mind. You say it's sata. Check the cable and connections. SATA drivers are inherently already there - built into the bios I think...

check the jumper pins on the hard drive. should be a cluster of 6 or 8 pins on it and probably should have a shorting jumper across 2 of them...

OP - IT IS THE JUMPER PINS. sata can be 3gb/s or 1.5gb/s

JUMPER PIN SHORTING ALLOWS A SATA DISC TO ONLY BE 1.5GB/S THIS IS CALLED SATA 1. SATA II IS 3GB/S.

wHEN YOU SHORT THE RIGHT PINS IT WILL BECOME SATA I. tHEN IT WILL BE SEEN. bASICALLY YOU DON'T HAVE A SATA II CAPABLE MOTHERBOARD SO YOU MUST MAKE THE HD LOOK LIKE A SATA I WITH JUMPERS. HOPEFULLY THERES A DIAGRAM ON THE HD LABEL SAYING WHICH PINS TO SHORT. if not it probably will not do any harm to try all combinations. just possibly you may need two jumpers but usually only one...

you do not need any drivers - it will work now!!!!

This is a common issue with Sata drives and XP installs and the lack of sata drivers native to XP even with SP2.

What motherboard do you have? Have you downloaded the driver from that site at all instead of the motherboard disk utilities?

If you need xp SP3 you can use your sp2 disk and a program call n-lite [link to www.nliteos.com] download this free program and you can not only add the sp3 service pack but also the sata drivers to the disk.. it will integrate and make a new XP disk for you that will not only have the sata drivers but also the SP3 preinstalled.. You will not need to have a floppy disk then it will automatically see the sata driver..

Nlite is pretty easy to use and free.
In fact using your motherboard disk you can preintegrate all your drivers into a new disk and then have a full install monty.

You may need to burn it to a dvd as the inclusion of sp3 will go over a cd limit.

Obviously to use the program you will need to use another machine with windows on it. but basically install the program. it will ask you for you xp disk. It will install the copy of xp to the hard drive. then run through the wizard and install drivers service packs tweaks and even choose to pre-enter your serial key. When you are done configuring it will integrate all the additions you have chosen and create a new xp disk with this preinstalled and you have the option to create an .iso or burn to disk.

I do this for all machines in my house. I create a master disk for each machine with drivers tweaks accounts and setup already done to save hours of reconfig. I keep the images on my backup and retweak as sp come along and make a new disk when needed. Save hours on an fresh install and things like sata drivers are not an issue anymore..

Yeah I tried that, the motherboard bios recognizes the drive, But not the software.

I talked to a friend at work and and he said the driver download I got is probably a self extracting .exe and I need to right click the file and select extract only and do not try to do the install....... cause I downloaded the file on my other computer which is Win2K and tried to execute it and it failed because it was the wrong operating system.

He also said I shouldn't have a problem anyway...... So I'm beginning to think that my motherboard is too old. I bought it three years ago.

I can't try anything at the moment because I'm at work and I really got to get back to it.......So I'll let yall know what I find out later this evening.

WOW, you have no fuckin' idea what you're talkin' about so just shut it... Windows XP ABSOLUTELY needs drivers for SATA hard drives... If you're like me OP, you have a newer laptop and Windows XP's install CD doesn't come equipped with the drivers needed for the newer SATA's... My BIOS also doesn't contain an option to switch modes...

OP... this is what you do.... Skip the floppy disk... What you need to do is download a copy of Windows XP and create a custom installation with it and place your SATA drivers in the installation....

This is one of the first links that came up on Google... You need nlite, a digital copy of XP, your SATA drivers, and a CD-R to burn this new installation discs...

Wipe off the drive with bleech to get any possible traces of virii off of it. If you want soak it in some bleech overnight to be sure. Swine Flu is tricky so you have to be sure!

If you want the RAID controller to manage the drive than you will need the F6 drivers. For those go to the manufacture of the board's site and then make the floppy from the files you download. If all you have is one drive in the RAID it will appear as a JOD. So, I suggest disabling any RAID cards in the BIOS and do as others have suggested and turn AHCI off. Don't forget the bleech!

Most of the advice I have seen here is probably wrong.

1. Contact you computer manufacturer and get the SATA driver in floppy format.
2. write the driver to floppy.
3. On installation of the XP, one of the first messages you will see is press F6 to load drivers. Do so quickly.
4. As XP is loading, it will ask for the driver. Make sure it is in the floppy and continue.
5. If it found the driver(s), it will ask you to select the correct one and then install.

That should do it.

With another pc you can create a install CD with SP3 and your current Windows XP disk

To create your own bootable Windows XP SP3 CD, you’ll need the following:

* A bootable Windows XP CD (any service pack level, Home or Professional)
* Windows XP SP3
* Bart’s Boot Image Extractor (BBIE)
* CDRom software

install vista in worst case you can browse a cd to find it in xp you just have the floppy option

I agree and I would slow the bios as slow as you can get.

Could you give us some stats on your motherboard and other hardware?

If the thing still gives you trash, if you have an old win98 cd around. Install and use the upgrade option.

Oh, and other thing you could try. Wash your CD and dry it off with a soft cloth

I was literally clueless when I encountered my litte XP install problem I must say. Always worked before, this beatiful slipstreamed XP sp2 reincarnation. Used it on at least five computers before without any kind of problem.

Googling for motherboard model, chipset and harddrive model gave the solution in an hour or so of searching.

I happened to have a rather old motherboard in this case, an ASUS A8N-SLI (with newest bios), nForce 4 SLI and so forth. A really nice MB still I must say but... old.

And I got this nice brand new super fast harddrive with perpendicular recording technology, don't remember name or model off the top of my head... anyway I strongly suspect the bios was not prepared for this kind of a novel outworldish drive so some uncommon and hard to guess bios settings were called for. Luckily I found exactly what I looked for when asking the right questions.

Ain't computers just loveable... when they work as they're supposed to... :)

A couple of you knew what I was doing wrong, but I swear it was not immediately obvious to me.

When I used the R repair option on the XP installer and tried to access the disk it said there wasn't anything there. Well finally I just tried to partition something that wasn't there and it saw the raw disk size. Okay, Okay I never said I was good at this.

Anyway it seems that I am on the road to making it work....... Thanks GLP. No one else I asked knew the right thing to say, but you all came through.

In all honesty I had tried earlier just to use the repair aspect of the installer, but I had never seen one not know there was something there, actually it seems it thought it was a removable drive and since I had two CD drives and a floppy I thought I was seeing the second CD drive.

But I thought what the heck, so I tried to partition it and it worked.
