"""""Elderberry juice (Sambucal) - AVOID - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. This substance is very effective against the common flu but may not be desirable for the H5N1 virus. Increases in these cytokines may trigger a lethal cytokine storm. (Isr Med Journal2002 Nov;4:944-6)"""""

This information was put out regarding bird flu (H5N1).

Does it hold true for swine flu (H1N1)?

Here's the way I understand why not to use sambucol to fight bird flu, why it doesn't work, and can even kill you:

Cytokines, TNF-a and IL-6, are produced by our immune sytem to fight virus, but they would do nothing against bird flu. When the body sees that it's defenses are not working it produces more of those cytokines. Taking sambucol increases the cytokine production even more, which could make the body produce too much leading to a lethal cytokinde storm.

OK I know that's fairly remedial, but that's how I understand it. Does this scenario hold true for swine flu?

Swine flu is a type A flu virus, and from what I gather the tests done showing the effectiveness of Sambucal were done against Type A flu.

I guess ultimately the question is: Do cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 work against swine flu?

Is there a Dr. in the house?
