NPR axes Christian radio programs

Pete Chagnon - OneNewsNow

A shocking decision has been handed down by the National Public Radio board.

In 1985, National Public Radio (NPR) adopted a policy stating that member stations had to provide "nonsectarian, non-political, noncommercial" educational programming. But in February 2009, the wording was changed to say: "NPR Member Stations shall provide ONLY [emphasis added] nonsectarian, non-political, noncommercial educational content on all broadcast channel(s) and related media distribution platforms such as member partners that use the NPR member brands."

The rule, which takes effect May 1, means that any NPR stations carrying religious programming must cease and desist that programming as of that date. In explaining its decision in a similar matter, PBS -- another federally funded media outlet -- says it "places a high value on presenting diverse perspectives, as opposed to rigidly adhering to any single political or religious point of view." Allowing such programming, it continues, "would cause the public's trust in PBS to erode, along with the value of the brand."

David McNabb is the host of "Christian Corner" on KJZA (in Williams, Arizona), which is a partner station with KJZZ in Phoenix. His and several other religious programs featured on the NPR member station will be axed effective tomorrow.

"The change is labeling any Christian content as sectarian and, therefore, not to be used on NPR," he explains. "As part of their mission statement, one of the things that they are not is they are not sectarian. But up until now they haven't defined sectarian as having religious content...and so that's the change."

McNabb's program had a half-hour weekend slot and was bringing in $300 per month in revenue. The other religious programming was bringing in revenue as well and actually out-performing other weekend "nonsectarian programming."

The change in NPR policy affects all NPR affiliates in the United States

his show is of christian platform. hes made references that he, a/jones and a few of his guests are targets of the govt - most recently last week.

orig he said he was sick of the debunkers and 'moron boards' - even took shots at GLP on the air. then in his last show he said it had nothing to do with anyone disagreeing with him. story isnt consistent.

that is pretty funny Ms. P. The wife used to be at NPR HQ and from what I know about the place it is money. If the show does not pull in donations at fundraising time they have to move to other programing that will. Fast Company just did a story on NPR and their new approach.

I have to say that I rarely tune in as much to it because they are now part of the MSM. Just three weeks ago one of the host of Market Place was on Wall Street proclaiming that banking was back.

Okay, I got ya now...If you listened to Alex's show last night and the stunt he did by calling the White House and leaving a very long message, there just might be ramifications to that entire genre of broadcasting.

This appears to be a step in that direction.

Surely Steve Quayle isn't on any NPR stations!

Does this mean NPR radio can't play Brahms and other classical religious music on Sunday mornings anymore?

Of course by "educational" programming they mean to continue promoting the Religion of Evolution as one of their "scientific" programs.

Nothing is "non-political", "non-religious", "non-educational"... intelligent people will fully realize that all is connected one way or another, when the blinders of compartionalization come off and take the interdisciplinary approach to education. So, I guess that NPR will now be asking for your donations to broadcast DEAD AIR. Very Funny.

i still dig npr. they just dont want it to be perceived to endorse 1 religion over another.

Christians would probably be pissed if NPR stations play Muslim or Hindu shows.

Ms. P.,

With all due respect, I think you are making a false connection here between NPR rules and Steve Quayle. Like another poster said, the likelihood of Steve Quayle being on any NPR station is about nil. I thought Steve was only on shortwave/internet, right? Maybe there's one station in Louisiana that broadcasts his show, along with the KKK Inspiration Hour and Heroes of the Confederacy program.

I listen to Steve and Alex all the time, but I think much of what they say (especially about Obama) is insanity! This is pure hate speech. It is one thing to disagree with someone's policies, but they ascribe to Obama every ill of humankind. Let's see some evidence, OK?

I listen because I like all viewpoints, and both men (they sure ain't gentlemen!) are entertaining, along with Hawk. But no one is denying Steve or Alex the right to rant and rave. All this news item is related to is NPR stations. The idea of an NPR station hosting either Alex Jones or Steve Quayle is akin to expecting FOX NEWS to provide an hour of programming each day where some blonde bimbo reads the collected works of Lenin and Marx.

I listen to NPR a lot. I have never heard any program on NPR promoting evolution. Try again.
