Santa Barbara wildfire threatening some 2,000 homes - 1200 homes Evacuated
Winds Could Fan Santa Barbara Wildfire

By SCOTT WEBER and JACK NOYES

Updated 10:36 AM PDT, Wed, May 6, 2009

Calming winds and water-dropping helicopters that flew into the night have helped hundreds of firefighters hold back a 190-acre Santa Barbara wildfire threatening some 2,000 homes. The estimated burn area was cut in half by the time of a 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning briefing.

About 1,200 homes have been evacuated.

Five schools in the area are closed on Wednesday: Peabody Charter, Cesar Chavez Charter, Roosevelt Elementary, Cleveland Elementary and Franklin Elementary.

County fire Capt. David Sedecki said Wednesday morning that flames are laying down because of diminishing winds.

The National Weather Service posted a wind advisory until mid-afternoon (3 p.m.) warning of winds 20-35 mph out of the north-northwest with gusts of up to 50 mph.

The blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon above San Roque Canyon. By Wednesday morning, no structures had burned, but flames raced within a half-mile of some neighborhoods.

The cause is under investigation.

political correctness is a doctrine.... fostered by a delusional, illogical minority...... and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media; which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I'd say, as a community, I think we're pretty much burned out on fires. No pun intended. All of that aside, three fires inside of one year and the fireman have done a remarkable job at saving both lives and property.
