Former Guantanamo prisoner freed in December 2007 resurfaces as key Taliban militant, AP quotes Pentagon and CIA officials.

Yahoo StumbleUpon Google Live Technorati Scoop del.icio.us Digg Sphinn Furl Reddit Pentagon and CIA officials claim former Guantanamo prisoner No. 008 Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul, now known as Mullah Abdullah Zakir, is the latest addition to the list comprised of 60 former detainees who have taken on militant leadership and resurfaced on foreign battlefields.

In December 2007 he was released along with 12 other Afghan prisoners to the Afghan government which consequently freed the man, officials say.

They say Rasoul has emerged as a key Taliban militant figure in southern Afghanistan where US troops are preparing to deploy to fight resurgent Taliban forces.

Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner 'leading Taliban in Afghanistan'
US intelligence officials have claimed that a prisoner released from Guantanamo Bay prison has emerged as the Taliban's leader in southern Afghanistan.

By Alex Spillius in Washington
12 Mar 2009

Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul, formerly Guantanamo prisoner No. 008, was among 13 Afghan prisoners released to the Afghan government in December 2007, according to the claims.

He is now known as Mullah Abdullah Zakir, a nom de guerre that Pentagon and intelligence officials say is used by a Taliban leader who is in charge of operations against US and Afghan forces in southern Afghanistan.

Pentagon officials have said that as many as 60 former detainees out of 500 released have resurfaced on foreign battlefields.

If the claims about Rasoul are valid, he would be the most senior to have done so. Officials offered no evidence for their claim, which came a few weeks after President Barack Obama pledged to close down the controversial jail on a US naval base in Cuba.

US authorities handed over Rasoul to the Afghan government, which in turn released him, according to Pentagon and CIA officials.

BACK FROM GUANTANAMO
Ex-Taliban Official Calls for Unity Government in Afghanistan

By Olaf Ihlau in Kabul
04/12/2007

Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, the former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, has been released from Guantanamo. Though under close observation by the government, he's already creating a stir in Kabul.

The black-bearded mullah's expression betrays disgust and rage. "The people don't want (President Hamid) Karzai's government, and they don't want foreigners here in Afghanistan either," says Abdul Salam Zaeef.

Zaeef is sitting on a gray plush sofa in a villa in western Kabul. Policemen guard the entrance to the estate, which is surrounded by a high mud-brick wall. A stocky bodyguard stands inside.

"Crime, corruption and foreigners"

Following his release, the cleric – now aged almost 40 -- chose to move to Kabul. Karzai's government is seeking to integrate the so-called "good Taliban" as part of a reconciliation program, offering them incentives. Zaeef -- and his two wives and eight children -- were provided with a handsome guest house, located in the dusty modern neighborhood Khosh Hal Khan. Former Taliban Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil lives around the corner. Like Zaeef, he was once a confidant of Mullah Omar.

The CIA are taking these innocent men out of the deserts torturing them to lose their religion and patriotism to run the Taliban for the CIA.

What the end goal is only they know.

They have spread the war into Pakistan from Afghanistan.

Just the latest in a long line of similar campaigns. Al queda was funded and ran by the CIA in Afghanistan and Yugoslavia. Iran was similarly overthrown in the 1950s.

The CIA is brainwashing Taliban leaders at Guantanamo.

US Funds Used to Pay Afghan Warlords
VOA News 22 June 2010

A congressional investigation says tens of millions of dollars of U.S. taxpayer funds are indirectly being paid to Afghan warlords, public officials and even the Taliban to ensure safe passage of U.S. supply convoys in Afghanistan.

A lengthy report released late Monday says eight Afghan-based private contractors working with the Defense Department through a $2.1 billion transportation contract are paying several thousand dollars per truck for guards.

The U.S. military says it has begun investigating reports of corruption in Afghanistan, and has created a task force to determine the impact of its contracting processes on corruption.
