I have seen Dachshunds with small wheels, like training wheels, affixed to their rear to mitigate this condition.

I wanted to thank you all for your warm and caring comments. I knew coming here with this would give us a myriad of possiblities.

Thanks for all the prays as our family is not quite the same as a dog can be like a family member.

has anyone ever experience this before with their dog.

He cannot walk pee, poop or move around at all.

We were at the vets until 2am last night and they gave him a steroid IV treatment but he doesn't seem to be improving at all.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Dog Lover~
We have used cold lasers on our dogs with great success. You can sometimes rent them. The Q 1000, and lasers like it, are very effective. Most vets know very little about these lasers and there use. Do not let that keep you from trying it. If you have the money, I would buy one as they are useful for everything from tooth decay to hair loss. If not, look them up and find out where you can rent one for a week. Use it several times a day around the area that seems affected. Good luck, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

He actually just walked across the living room wobbling very badly but he made it but barely. He can very easily walk over his other back leg and not even know it. It's pretty sad.

There is a little improvement though.

This is very difficult because it's like having a newborn in the house which we already have.

Thanks for all your cares!

did you just use one of those flea potions that you place on the back of their neck??? I used one that was too potent on my cat and that is exactly what happened... Be careful

The breed... it's a fact of life with that breed, very common and can sometimes be dealt with using hydrotherapy (as another poster said).

Some vets will suggest this, but only if they, or someone they know can provide the 'treatments' at a cost...$$$ leading owners to put the dog down.

You could read up on the disk related problems this breed is prone to and may find people who have 'cured' their dog in their own tub or pool. I'd go all out and try the swim therapy.

Do research online and maybe get a second opinion from a holistic vet, massage or other course of 'medication' could do wonders.

Steroids mask the problem, offers NO CURE!

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
This happened to my VERY healthy happy cat a few years back.
He went out in the morning and barely crawled back that afternoon.
Seemed not to be in any discomfort though in fact, he was purring.
Took him to the vets the next day....and he could not find a single thing wrong with him. Threw out a few scenarios like, might've been bitten by a snake.....tick...etc. but no spine trauma at all.

It was very emotional for I couldn't possibly think about putting this otherwise happy healthy 2 year old cat to sleep...so we took him home and realized (as the vet told us...) he won't be able to go to the bathroom and will end up with toxic poisoning.

So, we had no choice but to bring him back several days later....and let him cross-over.

It's very heartbreaking and I am sorry you're going through this.

'Helpless' is probably the best word to describe what you're feeling right now!

I am so very sorry

Thank you Sun it is a very helpless feeling. He looks so sad. I feel really bad for him. We have to express his urine and poop. Bring food and water right up to his face to have him eat; it's terrible.

God decided it was a good idea to speak through me to teach you a lesson about neglecting your dog and his osteoperosis. I'm sorry you've failed to take care of a family member who doesnt believe in the same things you do.

For shame.

Why would you say that? This only happened today, didn't it?
If so......how can you calculate and dismiss a living-life so quickly?

The pup is probably not even suffering (except for not pooping) so it tends to be the owners that really SUFFER because this doesn't sound like an injury or else the vet would've picked up on that.

So please......telling a worried pet-owner it's time to put down their beloved pet is something they don't need to hear....especially so early on. They're emotionally tapped out enough!
They're looking for hope not more sadness! Your suggestion does nothing but make a bad situation more negative!

He is not in any pain. We are helping him with all his bladder functions so he is not in any pain in that regards. He just drags his legs behind him. We do not let him do this but once as I don't want him to injure himself any further. He needs to rest now.

Thanks Sun some people don't understand but I understand that they say the things they do to inflict pain because of what me and my family represent...Jesus.

He was persecuted and so will the Christians that truly follow Jesus and His ways. Why would it be any different today??? It wouldn't be.

People develop peripheral neuropathy (numbness in the legs, arms and face if there is a lack of B12 and B1. Google food sources for these vitamins...tuna and salmon B12, various grains and vegetables for B1.

Then give your dog a really thorough bath and pay extra attention to the place where you applied the anti-tick stuff. Google for effective detergents, I don't know what works best to get rid of it.

I believe it is worth a try considering the numerous reports of adverse effects in line of what you have described.

Do you know about acupuncture for pets? I found out about it when my dog became paralyzed. He had a problem where his neck and spine join.

Two acupuncture treatments and he was good as new - for another 10 years when he finally passed from old age.

My vet said the sooner you get them treatment the better chances you have. She said 85% of all dog paralysis can be overcome with acupuncture.

I hope this helps!!

I am sorry for your pup's problems. I just put my Basset down 2 weeks ago. I spent 6 weeks living on a mattress in my living room with her bringing her water, food and carrying her outside. She went lame overnight.

For the 1st 36 hours my dog didn't pee. When she did it was like the damn broke. I kept calling the vet but they told me she would eventually pee. There is a certain way you can position their legs to get them to pee, you can find it on the net.

My baby was not ever going to walk again. It broke my heart. I tried and tried with her, but had to let her go. I wish you better luck.

We raised wiener dogs when I was a kid. here is what you need to do. Get a big size pool, or find out where you can use one. You need to put the dog into the water and with someone holding onto the front of the dog another grabs the hind legs of the dog and moves the legs back and forth, (like they do when they swim in water) this is called hydro therapy and it always worked after a few weeks they regain the use of their legs.
