.....just checkin' in for an OP-update!

Ya know....animals can have and hold the same place in our hearts that family members do (and sometimes, even more).

I don't know......I just feel this pet-owners pain and helplessness but I also believe there's hope here!

Have you used any Flea and Tick collars, powders or spot treatments like Frontline?

Those products have been know to cause this. Also you might want to check the dog food that you are using. There was a recall not long ago for food coming in from abroad that was too high in an artificial protein supplement tat was causing this problem with pets also.

Just went through the same thing last week. My dog was put on steroid treatment but did not respond and got worse instead of better. Completely paralyzed and had no bladder and bowel control. Saddest day of my life on sat with I had my 13 year old dog put to sleep.
Could not afford the surgery and MRI My thoughts are with you

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
has anyone ever experience this before with their dog.

He cannot walk pee, poop or move around at all.

We were at the vets until 2am last night and they gave him a steroid IV treatment but he doesn't seem to be improving at all.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Happened to both our dogs growing up, they both were sick and older. One had a huge tumor, the other smaller dog was just old. We had to put them both down.
My friends cat, happend to her 3 weeks ago. The Vet told her the cat more then likely suffered a stroke. She would never be able to walk again, and the other cats stopped going near her, my friend said, (she smelled of death), so my friend had to put her down.

OP, how old is your dog ? It seems strokes are more and more common in pets now a days. But unless you have plenty of money then usually treatment is expensive, and not guaranteed. That is also the same thing they told my friends when she took her cat in. She could not afford the treatment, and didnt want the cat to suffer.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
To help him walk, and maybe take him outside, you can put a towel under him, like a sling, between his belly and his back legs, as he is useing his front legs to walk, you are just helping him with his independence by using the towel as a sling, holding up his back end...That's what they do at animal hospitals and that is what the doctor had us do with our dogs when they lost the use of their back legs.
It's very helpfull to both of you.
Good luck and keep us posted !!

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
Happened to my minature dackshound also. Just went down in her back and was dragging her rear legs. Have an awsome vet tho. Took xrays and had a bad back from to much in breeding. Gave us steroids and told us to keep her quiet for six weeks. LOL. After two day of her crying because she could not go outside i picked her up and took her out and she started digging a whole in the yard rear legs looked lik a wish bone. She drug herself everywhere she wanted to go. Then one day she got one legs under her so she was a three legged dog. Then a few weeks later she got the other leg under. She walked like a drunk for several weeks. LOL. Now when she runs she runs like a rabbit on her rear legs. That was 10 years ago and she is now twelve. She has days that she tires herself out to much but she has been great. I have also seen other people take wheels off of toys and strap it under the rear of the dog and they use their front legs to pull themselves. So as long as they are not in pain there is a lot u can do - don't give up. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
I have heard of a condition called tick paralysis. maybe your dog got a tick infection. in that case he will bounce back in no time at all.

Yes, this is probably it. Check him, bathe him, remove any ticks and he will be OK. It happened to a dog I had growing up. Some ticks are really poisonous.

I meant to also say that this does affect the back legs only.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 593476

sounds like nerve damage to spine since both back legs are affected equally .. poor little dear . try putting it in bath tub to see if one rear leg can swimm or if both real legs equally affected ..a trama to his spine..but it could heal if the nerve is cut or not severed .

Your dog probably suffered a stroke.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 643944

I was going to say that too.My cat was fine in every way.One morning he got off the bed when I woke up.All of a sudden he was squirming around.Couldnt stan on his back legs, dragging himself along in a panic.Happened instantly.
Rushed him to the vet but they couldnt save him.He had suffered a stroke just that quickly.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
Dachshund are prone to displaced vertebrae-symptoms sound bad-

back injury-also steroid can make symptoms worse for a while but the dog needs to urinate or needs to have a catheter put in...

Some folks have used the doggy carts for dachshunds when they injure the lower back-if bowel habits and urination do not return-it is not good at all...

Any injuries or running or rolling that could of displaced the vertebrae??? If the spinal cord is putting pressure on the lower areas-this can be permanent...and does not do well

Even sitting upright can sometimes strain the dachshund back I am sorry to say

Research this online as well-it is common with that breed as much as I love them

hf Take care and I hope you find resolution soon

I am sorry to hear the news-I am sorry to have posted as I was writing while yours was posting.

I have a dachshund pek mix-to help offset the back weaknesses the breed has-Again sorry to hear the news. Take care hf

Father, I lift up FOJ and his family that they may be comforted and that their sadness be transformed into joy in knowing that as a loving Father you were there waiting to welcome their pet into your kingdom today. We know Father that the beauty of your dwelling place includes animals and that each has a special place there. We know that we will see and love our family members both people and pets again and we cannot imagine a better place for them to be than with you.

In the name of Christ Jesus. Amen.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
my little dachshund had this last year. first she was on steroids and crate rest and she did well but it took weeks. She was her old self and then it happened again. If your dog has no control of bowels etc take it to a specialist within 24 hrs. time is critical when they are at that stage. We took mine to a vet who specialized in neurosurgery. She had the operation, it was pricey but she is worth it. She is doing fine today only has a scare on her little back. I would get her a doggy wheelchair before I put her to sleep. I love that dog more than anything.

I am praying for your pup and you.

Our dachshund was kicked by a wild rabbit in our backyard in May. I expressed him 3 to 4 times a day, bathed him, did range of motion still give him lots of love. About three weeks passed before he could control his potty issues and he started gaining feeling again. He now has a wheel chair and he scoots. He tries to stand up on his own but one leg is just too weaak. Good luck with your baby.

Our dachshund has had the same thing happen to her. We couldn't affoed the surgery but we love her very much and she is still the happy dog she always was. Just love your dog, get a cart and remember to express her bladder so she doesn't get infections. We also did the steriods but the injury was too severe but do some research and you will find that dogs with disabilities can still be very happy and live full lives. hf

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
Breeding dogs this shape is cruel.
At one time this served a purpose and no one cared that the dog later suffered for it.
No one hunts critters that go into the ground anymore and there is/was likely not need to do it anyway.
Humans indulge in some really cruel "sports".

People should boycott all of these breeds.
When you buy a dog like this you are partly to blame for his problems.
If no one buys them and the reason is known, the breeders will breed for shorter backs and the poor dogs won't have to suffer.

I feel sorry for your poor dog, but not for you.
YOu just go ahead and suffer and throw in a large dose of guilt too. Have at it you Sadist.

So sad to hear this.

Same thing happened to my poodle. Took to my holistic vet and in 2 acupuncture treatments, he was fully mobile again. She said it was due to long-term stress at base of his neck. He was like a circus dog, always flying and tumblin. He lived to be 18, may he RIP.

Good luck OP.
