P.S. My vet said 80-85% of all canine paralysis can be fixed with acupuncture. The sooner they are treated, the more likely successful.

But she said even old injuries can be fixed.

I hope this helps.

Your dog probably suffered a stroke.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 643944

One year ago for one of my dogs too. A stroke and had to put him down at age 14 (human years). The nerves affected also affected organ function and he was going to have an agonizing death within days unless we stepped in with mercy.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
1 in 4 Doxies suffer slipped discs which can cause permanent paralysis within a matter of a couple of hours.

Most is related to obesity and jumping.

See vet IMMEDIATELY to diagnose where the disc is blown.

You only have a small window of opportunity to correct the problem.

I have been involved in Dachshund Rescue for over a decade.

Back surgery currently runs around $5,000. Acupuncture does work but can be expensive over a few sessions. Crate rest/steroids can work as well (sometimes).

Prevention is the cure. Do not allow your Dox to jump, run up and down a flight of stairs, or let kids wrestle around with them. Teach them the CORRECT way to hold them by scooping the dog up and giving the entire length of the dog full support.

Keep your Doxie lean and by all means if damage is permanent to where the skin is raw from dragging legs, etc. you must do the right thing and give it eternal peace.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
has anyone ever experience this before with their dog.

He cannot walk pee, poop or move around at all.

We were at the vets until 2am last night and they gave him a steroid IV treatment but he doesn't seem to be improving at all.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check his body for ticks.
Google "Paralysis ticks" and see if the symptoms there correlate. If he has one you need to get it off and get him to a vet that has an antiserum.
If he has a tick and you dont get it off he will die.

I had the same problem with my Pekingese. I used an energy machine on his spine for a couple of days and he is walking quite well again.....

He has spondylosis of the spine and various other health issues.

Do your research on this machine. They are still available, but you might have to look to find them.

They are also good for humans too.

Spinal problem, if the injury is low enough, with therapy the dog might be able to walk again, if it is high in the spine, it may affect lungs and heart, in which case there is a chance of survival but it may be a fatal injury within a few days even with corrective surgery. I hope your dog pulls through okay.

I had a dog black and white cockapoo about 18 years old at the time. Next thing right afterward, Buddy paralyzed on rear legs. I had him put to sleep about a day later because we didn't want him to suffer and that was all. It had happened about twenty years ago.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
this 'put down' thing is so selfish. can't you even have your dog with you until the last moments?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 672475

There are doggie 'wheelchairs' for their back legs--they get used to the device quickly and can get around pretty good. Look in to that solution if his legs don't improve.

I think the suggestion of a vet teaching clinic is a good one if your vet can't fix the problem. At least call a vet school clinic and talk with them as soon as you can.

Have you fed your dog any salmon (fish) lately? My dog became paralyzed after eating some salmon that we were cooking outdoors during a BBQ party. The vet said salmon poisoning is a rather common occurence in dogs in the northwest. Thankfully the dog recovered. Do not feed your dog raw salmon.

Don't feed your dog macadamian nuts it will paralyze them temperarly 24 hrs. My husbands dog loves them but I wont give him any.

We raised wiener dogs when I was a kid. here is what you need to do. Get a big size pool, or find out where you can use one. You need to put the dog into the water and with someone holding onto the front of the dog another grabs the hind legs of the dog and moves the legs back and forth, (like they do when they swim in water) this is called hydro therapy and it always worked after a few weeks they regain the use of their legs.

We had this happen to our dog when I was a kid. If you are in the mid-south it could be a parasite or the thing that happened to our dog was some type of hitch hiker plant seed drilled its way into the hind quarters affecting the dogs nerves causing paralysis.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
Usually totally reversible in these dogs, and quite common. We were dachshund breeders.

You need to do hydo therapy.

Find a pool about 4 feet deep. Get in with your dog. You might need a helper. Grab hind legs and move as if dog was walking. Every so often stop and let dog try to swim by itself.

After about a month the problem should be cleared up.

Good luck and happy badger hunting.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
If your dog goes out side, check him or her really well for ticks.
Check the spine, chest, under front arms, etc.
Tick paralysis is very common and until the tick begins to swell, it’s hard to see or feel it.
You’ll know if he has it by whether or not he’s eating and drinking.
They have a difficult time swallowing if this happens, so he may loose interest in doing anything that requires swallowing, and you’ll also notice labored breathing.
Also it can take over a week after finding the tick before the dog improves, so keep checking everyday until you see improvement.
Your dog may or may not have this condition.
My chow had this happen, and he began staggering around like he had ingested poison(mainly his back legs).
Scared the heck out of me, we all love our pets like children…
Good luck, I hope he or she is all right.
