Why do we celebrate 'Columbus Day' in America and not 'Vikings Day'??
The Vikings 'discovered' North America centuries before Columbus.

Do we praise Columbus because he did it to find more slave routes from Africa?

It's a religious thing. Columbus is something of an idol, and it has to do with why our capitial is in the District of Columbia. I forget where I read this, though.

The same reason we don't celebrate Clovis day.

The US, the newly separated from the UK populace wanted a way to celebrate their origins that was NOT tied to the United Kingdom. So, they selected an otherwise obscure non English discoverer. Columbus has already been relegated to the trash heap by Spain and was approaching obscurity. Being Italian, he seemed like the perfect candidate. He had no national ties to a country that wanted to adopt the US as a colony.

Maybe we should start doing so? Before it is illegal to celebrate any European heritage, because of course that is "racist."
